Your thoughts on these lyrics

Greed
Causing innocent blood to flow
Entire culture lost in the overthrow
They came to see, take whatever they please
Then all they gave back was death and disease

People were left with no choice but to decide
To conform to a system responsible for genocide
Responsible for genocide, Responsible for genocide

AIDS is killing the entire African nation
And a vaccine is still supposedly under preparation
But these governments, they don't mind the procrastination.
They say we'll kill them off, take their land and go there for vacation

My peoples' culture was strong and was pure
And if not for that white greed, it would have endured
My people were left with no choice but to decide
To conform to a system

Their minds enslaved
Their souls encaged
You feel the rage
This brutality can never be undone
But the sun has not yet set
The bass and drums and microphone a threat
That's when you've got to get the cry from the inside
And see that they're responsible for genocide
Responsible for genocide, Responsible for genocide

You jam your culture down my throat
Say I'm inferior when upon it I choke
You fill my mind with a false sense of history
And then you wonder why I have no identity

We'll strike a match and it'll catch
And spread the insight we need
A tiny fire burning bright
Shedding light on the darkness of greed

Yes, yes y'all, and you don't stop
Shedding light on the darkness of greed
Yes, yes y'all, and you don't stop
Shedding light on the darkness of greed

Think there is alot of accuracty in these lyrics? Especially the bolded part.

Open up your hate and let it flow into me.

You motha get up, come on get down with the sickness!

This would have been quite a statement were it made two-hundred years ago - I think it's absolutely bogus to accuse the American (that is what's implied here, right?) Federal Government of embodying this attitude when we spend billions upon billions of dollars on relief and treatment overseas.

I don't particularly care for George Bush, but song lyrics like these only exist because since he took office it's been trendy to bash America and her politics. In my eyes this is a pitiful attempt to appeal to impressionable kids who don't do their own research or check facts. It's not like we have a vaccine we're using exclusively for non-Africans.

It's just another boring song talking about how much everything in the world sucks. Been there, done that, moving along now.

I completely agree with you on that.

It sounds like the kind of crap that you here at anti-APEC / WTO / G8 summits
Uh-oh, someone didn't get enough sleep last night =P

I like Rage. They hold a certain political viewpoint and I respect them for it. While I don't neccesarily agree with everything they say I'm glad that they put out music with meaning.

Also, this song was written well before George Bush Jr. became president.

Do I think these lyrics are accurate? no.
Particularly the highlighted ones? no.

As was previously said, African abuse is something that was existant during imperialism. If anything, we're a big brother. We send unparalleled amounts of support to Africa to aid in relief of HIV and AIDS. Is it a travesty? yes. Do I think we should help? Yes. Do we hold any responsibility to help? I don't think so. Are we respnsible for entrenching the problem? Absolutely not. It sounds like angry venting to me.

From reading the first two paragraphs, I surmised these lyrics were about America's "Manifest Destiny" and our subsequent genocide upon Native Americans.

Wrong again!

Sounds like a perfect protest song. Aids is killing a whole bunch of Africans, and governments could do more. The rest is just there for rhymin purposes !

You're right - I was referring exclusively to the lyrics in bold type. On that note, I don't think there's an open-minded and well-educated person alive today that doesn't think the treatment of Native Americans (all-inclusive, South and North) in the early settlement days was anything less than atrocious. Those song lyrics, though factually correct, are unimaginative and hardly politically edgy. Not RATM's finest moment here.
