I've heard rumors of this happening....
At this point, I think I would appreciate even seeing the message appear. All these years playing D2, and I still have never seen a "Walk" msg, much less had a chance for an Anni drop

Some professional dclone hunters roll back the servers after walking it so that they can return the server to a high SoJ sold count and walk it again cheaply.
People also do this to mess up someone else's walk for the above and various other reasons.
If a server walks, it is best to get your anni fast and get out. If you can't kill dclone quickly, contact a trusted friend with a smiter that can.

If you are afraid of dying to dclone get some trusty help as soon as you realize you're on a server that is going to walk. Once you see "Diablo walks the earth," go to the Arcane Sanctuary waypoint, buff yourself with call to arms, holy shield, and whatever else your character uses, then go through the portal to Palace Cellar 3. Dclone will spawn alone in place of Fire Eye. Kill him and leave the game as quickly as possible.
Do not do this unless you cannot find anyone to help you and are afraid you cannot kill or will be killed by dclone.

I use the same strategy for collecting anni's every season when I'm playing. I was never happy with the IP chasing method where you troll various sites and channels for hot servers and repeatedly join games hoping to get onto the right server. Instead I let DClone come to me rather than chasing him down. I let my private Hell games run overnight and throughout the day. Using this strategy, in the morning you are greeted with
1. Game lost (booted by bnet for inactivity, serverside crash, glitch in internet etc). Start new private hell game.
2. No SOJ message - bummer. Start new private hell game or leave existing game running depending on mood.
3. SOJ messages but no walk. Leave game running and try again after work.
4. SOJ and DClone walk messages. Yeehah! WP to Frigid Highlands, smite DClone where Eldrich usually is, wishing for a 20/20/10. Mule off for trading purposes if anni is trash. All this while chewing toast and drinking orange juice over breakfast.
This strategy is slow but works and nets me around 10 anni's per season or over a 6 month period. I keep the best ones or give to friends and trade the others. I run my machine 24/7 most times anyway since I'm working on various computing projects.
The best time to get an Anni is in the week or two following a Ladder reset. Make a 1pt smiter first and get him ready and into Hell within the first couple of days. Sites that (against the rules) sell ladder items are stocking up on Anni's by selling their recently dumped store of non ladder SOJ's. Last season I got 3 Anni's in the first week and it could have been four but I missed the first walk because my smiter wasn't strong enough to bring DClone down (had to sadly abort mission).
The only time this strategy failed to work was during a time when there was massive public duping hacks going on and noone could run a game for any extended period of time.

I had that happen to me once. I think Blizzard's does this on purpose because people dupe soj's and vendor them. I cant stand when people do stuff like that I would just vendor legit soj's to save the economy from being ruined. Something tells me that Blizzard's should make soj drops higher if thats how we have to earn an anni.
