Re: WTB: Book Recomendations!!!

I haven't seen anyone mention The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. My father had been after me to read it for years so naturally I didn't until well after I got out of college. Very good book.

Also, re: the Sword of Truth series; it's entertaining to start with, but about five or six books in it gets very, very preachy and I disagree strenuously with some points of Goodkind's philosophy so it got very hard for me to read. I'm glad the series is over really.

Hey Garbad, it seems like years...

Anyway, any book from Jack Vance will do. It will be the best you have ever read.

Re: WTB: Book Recomendations!!!

Speaking of the Sword of Truth series, this interview with Terry Goodkind popped up on another forum I frequent and freeeeoooow! is he nuts!

Actual quotes from the interview:
"Gang rape is democracy in action."

"In World War II, in Japan, there were no deaths of Americans by insurgence, and the reason [for that] is because America, at that time, had the courage to crush those who were enforcing evil ideas. We may have had to kill a lot of people, but it was the only way to crush those evil ideas. And because we crushed those evil ideas, an entire culture in Japan grew up to create a great, noble, free people who have become an engine of freedom and an engine of economy in the world."

Watch out if you belong to any organized religion, because it sounds a lot like Goodkind endorses killing evil people and his books give every indication that he sees religion as the ultimate evil.

It's annoying particularly because I agree with some of the points he raises, but he's so blind to his own flaws and prejudices and indeed the reality of how his philosophy would play out if it were universally adopted.

When I was younger and I was trying to convince my parents of some point I was happier if my youngest brother disagreed with me because he was so rubbish at arguing that having him on your side practically guaranteed your defeat. Goodkind is like that.

Sorry for the detour.

No offense, but I have read the sword of truth series and I thought it was both mediocre writing and became a shell for him to proselyte through. And he really is psychotic.

I have many that are still in process, some by painfully slow authors, so I'll aski if your looking for completed series or not?

The Travis McGee books by John D. MacDonald are gradually fading into obscurity, which is a shame because they are great whodunnits and are responsible for quite a few mystery tropes.
Spider Robinson turned me on to those books, good recommendation.
