Would you shop at this store?

    *Let's hold hands and pretend*

A grocery store just opened up in your home town, they promise to start each worker at at least 14 bucks an hour and provides free medical benefits. The company offers matching 401K benefits and a free day-care facility for their employees.

However, the catch is that the groceries are 50% more expensive than any other store. And they never have sales. ;)

    Would you shop there?

I voted "yes" but I meant "maybe." An upscale store (which I assume this would be) that offered items that I couldn't get at the MegaMart down the street would get my business for those premium goods. I wouldn't be buying rice and beans and so on in bulk there, though.

Yeah, there'd still be regular stores around with their normal prices and normal wages for their employees.

Honestly, it depends on their range of products. If it was worse or more expensive than the supermarket down the road then no bloody way matey. However if they are providing higher-quality goods then it would be a lot more difficult for me to make such an off-the-cuff decision.

No this store would just be a "regular" supermaket, the only special characteristic about it is how they treat their workers.

edit: To clarify: This store offers the same products, and the same ambiance and level of service as the store down the street, but with 50% higher prices and better treated employees.

I'm curious whether people are willing to pay more for products to help workers.

I don't think I'd shop there if I could get the exact same thing, quality and all, at another store for 2/3 the price. Most people trying to raise a family, for whom groceries are a real and major expense, would agree with me, I think.
So, the store wouldn't last all that long, would it?

I could do it if I used to be working at a regular store and now I'm getting hired by the new store.
If there are many other regular stores around, I really can't see an advantage at going to the new store.

The American public has voted on this very topic with all the dollars they spend at Wal-Mart . . . and their votes look pretty much just like the votes on this poll. :)

The way your numbers are structured, no.

But when it comes to slightly more expensive local shops versus cheaper chain shops, I will almost always pick the locals if it's a quality store. Not meaning that their stuff is of better quality, just that they are well-run, friendly and has good service.

Oh, and this especially applies to restaurants. I HATE eating at chains when there are good local places.

No, I personally would not. If the service and items are at the same quality level. I would rather pay less for the items. For example, your forced to eat some crappy fastfood resturant. Same service, same food. Would you rather pay more?

No I wouldn't if it was a speciality store, which we have many around here being a rich town and all, I would but since it't not then no.

    Nope.

When I go in a store, the only person that counts is... me.

On the other hand, that doesn't mean I support Walmart also. Why? because of ... me. Walmart causes lots of little business that I frequent to go out of business, so i lose in the long run. I want lower prices, but I also want variety. (not to mention quality, Walmart sucks there).

Whether the store treats its workers nice or like dirt makes is of no consequence. Yep, you guest it, I crossed the picket lines like a scabber during the strikes.

Terribly controversial for a liberal-conservative don't you think?

You communist scum! To eradicate vermin like you is why I went to Korea! Take your bag of socialism and sell it somewhere else. I KNOW what you're up to! I hope GWB puts you in prison in Cuba, where you can play soccer with other perverts!

Note, however, that the perverts would likely align themselves with those Eurosissies who call the game "football." ;)
