Would there be any interest in a CtC tournament?

I proposed a tourney earlier that people said was too complicated. Dazliare proposed a tourney where only blue/yellow items (including jewels) could be used, but that didn't seem to attract a lot of interest. So here is my new idea, a CtC tourney. Checking the tourney list, I didn't see anything like this. The rules would be:
1. Initially, you can equip anything you want
2. Once you acquire an item through any means that has a "Chance To Cast" (CtC) affix, you must try to equip it into either an empty slot or in place of an item that doesn't have a CtC affix (See the Exceptions/Clarifications below)
3. Once a CtC item is in a slot, it can only be replaced by an item with an item with a CtC affix
4. Slots are Helm, Amulet, Weapon, Armor, Shield/Off-hand Weapon, Switch Weapon, Switch Shield/Off-hand Weapon, Gloves, Left Ring, Belt, Right Ring, Boots, Hireling Helm, Hireling Weapon, Hireling Armor
5. Rune words can be used, but only if they provide a CtC affix

Exceptions/Clarifications:
A. For armor and helms, you and your hireling can always equip a grey armor/helm socketed with topazes. If you have found a CtC item for those slots in the past, then only CtC items or a grey item socketed with topazes can go in that slot
B. Quest reward items from Charsi, Larzuk and Anya can always be equipped. You must use all three of those quests by the time you finish that difficulty
C. You never have to "force" a weapon into the hireling slot, disarming the hireling. If you find a third CtC weapon (or fifth for Barbarians) and none of them can be equipped by a hireling that you can hire, your current hireling can continue with his/her current weapon
D. OTOH, if one of your first three (or five for Barbarians) weapons you find can be equipped by a hireling that you can hire, then your hireling must equip a CtC weapon. For example, if you are using an Desert Mercenary with a non-CtC weapon when you find as your third CtC weapon a bow with a CtC affix, you must change to a Rogue Scout or go without a weapon. If in Act I you find a CtC Bardiche and two other CtC weapons but no CtC bows, that means your Desert Rogue can equip whatever weapon you want in Act I, but when you reach Act II you must hire an Desert Mercenary and have him equip a CtC weapon or have your hireling go with a weapon
E. If you have to choose between equipping a CtC shield and a CtC two-handed weapon, you may choose which one you want to equip

!!! Remember - Blue Necromancer Head and Paladin Shields can be rerolled in the cube with a spiked club and two skulls until you get a CtC suffix !!!

Edit: Added under exemptions the section about quest rewards and the section about choosing between a shield and a two-handed weapon

I like this!
Not overly complicated, and can lead to some weird item setups, and it will also be a challenge to put together late game gear.

Funny - I was brooding over (twinked) CtC gear characters the last few days :)

Such a tournament would probably produce a lot of Oath-based characters :) All other non-caster builds might be at a disadvantage though, because damage-wise, most CtC items aren't viable at all (barring some Elite uniques and expensive runeword items). On the other hand, I can see some more people trying out 1.11 runewords (Myth, Peace etc.) and Safety craft items.

As an overview, may I post these lists for your convenience?

Item skill bonuses from diablowiki with CtC lists for Uniques/runewords
Chance to cast explanations at the amazon basin with links to extensive links for the different sources of CtC affixes.

Regarding the rules: If I see a CtC item in the trade window of a merchant, do I have to buy it if I have the money? Do I have to check all items in store?

What about item effects like "Hit blinds target", "Hit causes monster to flee", "Reanimate as Returned", "Fires Explosive/Magic Arrows" - are they considere CtC, too?

BTw, for the lucky ones: Socketing a Rainbow Facet anywhere makes the item usable, I guess?

Interesting idea! I can see myself starting up my 15th tournament character (never to finish all of them!) and ditching/postponing my own Cubist idea/character :)

Thanks for these. Your links were broken, but I have corrected them in the above.

You mean Hit Power craft items, don't you? I would think all types of crafting would be popular in this tourney.

No and No. What matters is acquiring the item.

What about item effects like "Hit blinds target", "Hit causes monster to flee", "Reanimate as Returned", "Fires Explosive/Magic Arrows" - are they considere CtC, too?
I would say things with a percent chance of triggering a cast skill are okay. So "Hit blinds target" doesn't count as a CtC, "Hit causes monster to flee" does, "Reanimate as Returned" does, "Fires Explosive/Magic Arrows" doesn't, "Chance of Hit Piercing Target" doesn't, oskills don't, "Aura when equipped" doesn't, "Chance of Deadly Strike" doesn't, Charges don't, "Chance of Crushing Blow" doesn't, "Chance of Open Wounds" doesn't, "Increased Chance Of Blocking" doesn't.

BTw, for the lucky ones: Socketing a Rainbow Facet anywhere makes the item usable, I guess?
Yes

I was thinking about having a rule for Assassins that they must equip Katars or Shields and CtC Katars and Shields only count towards their equipment slots. Something similar for Amazons. But I decided against it.

Such a tournament would probably produce a lot of Oath-based characters
Any suggestions for Oath-based characters? I am a newbie compared to you and jiansonz and I have no idea what build would be well-suited for this tournament.

I'd be interested in this, although I didn't finish my last tournament due to lack of time, and subsequently losing my 'flow'.
Throw a banana at me if I missed this in the rules, do you have to play HC?

What do people think? As there are so few people playing tourneys now, I was thinking of letting both HC and SC players play with separate tracking blocks.

At first I was like "errrr not my thing", but now that I think about it, I'd probably join. If anything, it's just nice to read progress reports and updates from other participants and to get ideas. I'll have to think about a build.

That said, I'll have to wait until after the green and gold tourney; I just got to NM A3 yesterday :)

Usually SC is allowed, but death disqualifies from "officially" winning the tournament. For most people nowadays though it's about playing the tournament and beating the game and not necessarily about beating the participants ;-) I'd say it's up to you.

Pul AND Mal, that is far from guaranteed even with the generous 1.13 rune drops. Would be nice, though. Maybe a chance to finally try that Berserker I have wanted to do.

You're probably right :) But hey! One must never stop dreaming! Of course, BotD has CtC, too... :whistling:

The more I think about this idea, the more I like to join :)

EIDT: I was just thinking...in theory, one could decide never to pick up or identify magical items, improving their chance of being able to use items without CtC...of course, this is not in the spirit of the tournament, but I still wanted to point it out.

Of course, this could be circumvented by adding a scoring system based on number of items with CtC equipped or something like that. This might encourage people to equipe CtC items as soon as possible. ????

What about making it so that if you don't have a CtC item, you have to use a magic item? Kind of like negative feedback control, ish, not really, but y'know.

Doing that would be very weird. I think you make much less when you sell unidentified items.

I will change the rule from "Initially, you can equip anything you want" to "Initially, you can equip any white or blue item you want"
