    World Cup 2006!

Here's hoping this is a good place for soccer (football) enthusiasts. None of my friends seem big into the World Cup even though the CONCACAF qualifiers are going on right now. I got to see the first half of the US men's game against Guatamela. I was thoroughly impressed, and I wish I could have caught the game against Mexico.

The ref in that game was terrible, at least in the first half. He let things get way too out of hand. Anyone else see the game?

Watched em both. Soccer is my religion.

US vs. Mexico was a miserable game. The US frankly deserved the result they got--they were ice cold during the entire first half and didn't turn it on until the 55th minute or so. At that point, they nearly caught up, but it was too little too late, and especially against a world class team like Mexico. I was sorely disappointed with the US' performance Sunday.

Tonight they showed their true colors. Chance after chance, and if not for a couple of great saves/poorly struck balls, the score could have easily been double what it was or more (final result 2-0 US).

If I weren't on my way to bed and in need of sleep (sick as a dog), I'd sit here all night breaking down the play of each player on the team. Perhaps tomorrow.

PS: The officials weren't too great tonight, either. A lot of very suspect plays, several tackles from behind that went uncalled, and even a blatant handball in the area on the part of a Guatemalan defender during a very intense play where the US fired off 3+ quick shots. I was dissatisfied with the refereeing, but we got a good result regardless.

At least the refs called a crappy game both ways. I'm excited to learn a bit more about all these new US players over the next 15 months or so. I was a huge fan 3 years ago, and I can't wait for it all to pick up again. I was one of those crazies staying up all night to watch the games. Actually, I went to Columbus to watch the US vs. Mexico game and the US vs. Germany game. At Crew stadium they had a ginormous screen set up along with free chips and pretzels.

Thats funny, most people I know wouldn't think much of the US when you mention football :)

So your pick on who's gonna win the World Cup is?

That's what Portugal thought too. And Germany, for that matter, and they barely escaped with their pride intact as well.

Well Eddie Johnson for one, he's tearing it up. His goal was very well played, with a nice assist from Donovan too. Ralston and Ching were also players I hadn't seen before. Who else is new?

edit: Man that Germany game was so close.

KOREA TO WIN TEH WURLD CUP!!!1!

    Meh.

2-1 against Uzbekistan isn't too bad...

Anyone see the England match last night? The damn ref disallowed 2 penalty decisions, even when one of them was right in his face while Beckham went down from behind.

As the tv is not situated in the correst spot i couldn't multi task my duties. WoW won out this time. O well. Though i would love to the US win the world cup i wouldn't mind it if either England or Germany won though those outcomes are still up in the air. I'll be honest that i'm not up to date on World Cup qualifiers but i will watch the games in... next year i guess. Heh cool, I'll be in Greece during that time and from what i understand their team is pretty good.

My heart wants England to win, my head, well David Beckham isn't as good as he used to be :)

Germany's "guarenteed" a place in the quarter finals since they're the host.

US is actually playing decently well compared to last time :)

England weren't that good last night...

Beckham in particular was an a***. He was so dis-respectful. Standing around drinking water while the game carries on and then playing with one boot on. It just came across to me like he thought the oppersition (not going to try and spell it! ) weren't worth taking seriously. Bad show...

I'm so gutted for my team Wales. To lose with three mins to go

To a bloody keeper error too. *sigh*

Don't think we have any chance to qualify now. :(

    World cup? Who cares....

Who saw Rooney's volley? GOOD OR WHAT?

    :p

Beckham played pretty well last night, put in some decent crosses which should have been followed up properly...stupid Owen, its not his day :D

Yeah Rooneys shot was pretty special, Lampards curling shot which came off the post was rather good too.

Owen should have stayed at Liverpool, serves him right. [/jealousy]

This is where I root for Israel.

    1-1 against France last night.

Usually Id say this is very respectable, but we needed to win that one.

Rooney should SHOULD have got that in. Same goes for Lampard. He always shoots from there and gets it in, but not this time -.-

Owen should have stayed at Liverpool. No doubt about it. Anyway his time has passed :D

Gerrard's goal was pretty nice, smashed it down at the ground and bounced up into the goal :p

Gerrard said after the game is was a miss hit.

Owen is still a good player imo. Just needs to get first team footie at Real to get his confidence up again.

On a slightly different note... England have NO chance of winning the World Cup next year with Eriksson as manager. I really hate that guy.
