    Welcome, Friends, to my second Timetraveller's crafting miniguide. Today we will be examining rare jewels, which can be quite nice items, but are usually considered inferior to magic(blue) jewels because the best jewel affixes are blue only, and everyone knows that rare jewels (unlike other types of rares) will get only 3-4 affixes, right? Every now and then, someone will ask about rare jewels with more than 4 affixes...when this happens, they typically get one of the above responses...

    However, close examination of the patch notes for LoD (patch.txt in your D2 folder) reveals the following entry under the notes for patch 1.09:
    Now, experienced 1.07 players will quickly tell you that in 1.07, rare jewels are HORRIBLE...1.07 rare jewels are capped at 3 affixes, and 1.07 jewel affixes are generally MUCH worse than later patches! Fortunately, jewels affixes were overhauled and upgraded with patch 1.08...and so was the number of affixes possible, up to 6!

    Now, admittedly, its VERY hard to find rare jewels in 1.08...for one thing, MF just doesn't work there, so rares (and sets/uniques) are, well, RARE! Fortunately, there is a cube recipe that has been around since classic for rerolling rares: 6xPSkulls + Rare item = new rare item. Now, this formula does tend to lower the ilvl of items, so you'll want to do it with a high level character, because clvl matters! Fortunately, jewels are qlvl=1, and the highest alvl non-blue only jewel affixes are just alvl57 (of Burning/Thunder elemental damage affixes), so you just have to stay above ilvl57 to enable all non-blue only affixes!

    OK, but how to get rare jewels to reroll? As I said before, its pretty hard to find a rare jewel in 1.08 to begin with... The answer is to get your rare jewels in 1.07. As you may be aware, MF is a little 'odd' in 1.07...if you hit certain breakpoints, you can force drops of a certain quality! In hell difficulty of 1.07, with 608MF, Champions and Uniques will drop rare quality items! So, running areas with champs/uniques of monster types that tend to drop jewels (ghosts/council members/etc.) will get you rare jewels relatively quickly, and they will be of high enough ilvl to reroll decently.

    So, what kind of jewels can one get this way? Well, here is one I rolled for my current 99er:

    I read the title and was wondering when it changed, when I realized this was a new miniguide :p

    Someone else will have to do all the work, but I'd love to see some of the crazy results out of this!

    Damn you worg... now I have to play 1.07/8 again T_T
    That second jewel is fantastic btw. I will plunder it off your hands one day. Oh yes, I'm so gonna plunder it from you (well in case I don't get one of those myself).

    608 MF seems fairly tricky to get on barb at least. At most I can get 521 on kill switch. Would probably need brutal one hander + Isted gull to make it semi viable without resorting to merc kills or sorceress (don't think they are trav material anyway). But probably harder thing is to actually accumulate skulls. How many jools/skulls you burned to get those two?

    Also we all want more samples :D

    Wow, that's great analysis! Rare jewels do turn up in 1.07 and the 1.08 reroll via skulls is a great method, well done! I've never known a good reason to get a 1.08 install working and now this is a compelling one!

    Hitting 608MF got a LOT easier once I got a second 1.07 Skullders'...I DO rely on merc kills, using my sorc...Hell council was not really feasible until I got a wand w/lvl3 LR charges to break LI, but now I just pull a few of the council at a time, LR them, sliver them w/static and let the merc tap them with a BKSC, the CB does the trick even when they're PI...

    My MF outfit is:
    Shako(ptopaz)[74]
    Skullder's(ptopaz)[146]
    Classic Gull(Ist)[80]
    Milebregah's Orb shield[20]
    Crafted Caster boots[33]
    Crafted Blood ring[40]
    Merc 3os helm w/3ptopaz[72]
    Merc Skullder's(ptopaz)[146]
    --------------
    74+146+80+20+33+40+72+146=611MF

    Prior to finding the second Skullder's I used a 4ptopaz armor and wore Goldwrap/more MF jewelry/MF charms...

    Frozzzen, in the long run, pskulls are definitely the limiting factor...I've long since started keeping a couple flawless skulls on my runners in 1.07, ANY gem shrines get used for upping those...both of those jewels took a couple rerolls to get (you can tell by the ilvl...most of my rare jewels from 1.07 are ilvl **+, and my 1.08 crafter is level 96 (I'm working on leveling up a new on all the way to 99)...at lvl96, jewels will eventually 'normalize' at ilvl 64-65, which is more than high enough to get all the available affixes.

    I have been working on this for awhile, so I have done a lot of these, looking for great +mindamage jewels, like the first one I showed...being able to get 6 affixes raises the chances of that exponentially over modern jewels!! I'll be showing off some very impressive resullts when I finish my 99'er, and show off all his gear.

    and now you know why I've been trading for 1.07 skulls :p

    I'd love to try to get some crazy 1.08 rare jewels, but having the patience to kill the council like that... I'm not sure if I would be able to.

    on a related note for those interested or as clueless as me: I discovered this post from RTB when I was wondering, if rare jewels still could have 3 prefixes or suffixes or only 2 once their total number of affixes got lowered to 4.
