Woman Strangles Intruder

(AP) A nurse returning from work discovered an intruder armed with a hammer in her home and strangled him with her bare hands, police said.

Susan Kuhnhausen, 51, ran to a neighbor's house after the confrontation Wednesday night. Police found the body of Edward Dalton Haffey, 59, a convicted felon with a long police record.

Officer Katherine Kent said homicide detectives have determined that Kuhnhausen killed Haffey in self-defense. She said a prosecutor is investigating but that the case is not expected to go to a grand jury.

Follow-up Story:

(AP) When Susan Kuhnhausen returned home from work one day earlier this month, she encountered an intruder wielding a claw hammer. After a struggle, the 51-year-old nurse fended off her attacker by strangling him to death with her bare hands.

Neighbors praised the woman for her bravery, and investigators said they believed the dead man — Edward Dalton Haffey — was burglarizing Kuhnhausen's home.

But after an investigation, police now say the intruder Kuhnhausen strangled was apparently a hit man hired by her estranged husband — Michael James Kuhnhausen Sr. — to kill her.

After seeing what she can do to an armed intruder the husband better hope he never gets out.

Considering how long it takes to strangle someone to death she must really have been wanting to make sure he was dead before leting go.

Most likely she killed him on purpose beyound self defense. But it cant be proved so it will be writen off as self defense.

i would make sure he was dead too before i let go of his windpipe...i would probably put a big dent in his forehead with his hammer too just in case he had some fight left in him.

It doesn't take long to strangle someone if you do it right. Thumbs right on the softspot at the base of the neck, right above the top of the chest.

Machina it is a word.

If there is a man in my house with a hammer in his hand and he still can't kill me he deserves to die.

I was thinking that. But don't tell it to the prosecution.

What do you mean? It takes the same amount of time to suffocate no matter where you're being grabbed. Well, unless your windpipe isn't cut off completely.

Maybe everyone else needed to be booked in advance.

Is burglarizing a word?
It is, believe it or not.

Nope, according to the article he was 59. She was just fat:

...

Haffey, about 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, had convictions including conspiracy to commit aggravated murder, robbery, drug charges and possession of burglary tools. Neighbors said Kuhnhausen's size — 5-foot-7 and 260 pounds — may have given her an advantage.

Exactly, Don. The method I described completely cuts off the wind pipe, whereas just throttling someone a la Homer J. does not.

Oh, I see then. How long does it take to suffocate to death anyway? From what I recall it can be highly variable - haven't some people survived for hours without oxygen? Or at least they were able to be resuscitated afterwards.

No idea really. I can't imagine strangling someone though, when your air gets cut off you get 'oxygen hungry' or something like that and start fighting like crazy.

Regardless of whether it was self-defense or not, the criminal deserved it anyway considering he was armed, and intruded her house...

There are three ways to really strangle someone if I remember my choke holds right.

The arteries, the trachea, and the something(starts with a hard c) sinus reflex[I think this one can only help the other two and doesn't really work on it's own]

Anyway, those are the ways to do it and I would wager it takes a different amount of time to kill depending on which are used and in what degree. I known the arteries will kill the fastest as they instantly starve the brain and the trachea is the slowest and hardest to kill with(Pro wrestlers like to use it because you turn bright red and look like you are dying when you really aren't)

The real question is, why was a criminal with this history allowed to still be a participant in free society? We are in dire need of harsher punishment for criminals.

More importantly, what the hell is "aggravated murder"? It only says conspiracy to commit, what exactly does that mean? I wouldn't be so quick to judge without knowing all the facts.

Good on her, though.

7-8 minutes. Of which he will be unconscious fo the last 5 minutes while she keeps choking him.
That long, huh? What exactly happens, does the brain starve and die?
