Windows XP and alt-tabbing from diablo?

I used to have Windows ME, and now have XP Pro, clearly a better OS. However, the problem comes in that I alt tab from games alot... With windows ME, I could just alt tab from whatever I was on, talk on msn or whatever, change what playlist winamp is playing, go back to the game with little to no lag. However, now with Windows XP, with any BLIZZARD games (it doesn't do this with any non-blizzard games such as CS), but my blizzard games (diablo 2 and warcraft 3) lag like hell when I alt tab, as in it takes like literally 30-40 seconds to alt tab. This gets really annoying since I like to talk on IMs too when playing games...

Anyone know what might be causing this and how I might be able to fix it? (If possible?)

If it matters this is my computer: (Crap I know)

    1 ghz pentium 3 processor
    256 mb SDRAM
4 mb integrated intel graphics thingy pos

Actually that's about all I can think of that would have an effect on this problem... and I have DSL internet...

    Thanks.

Hmmmm well clearly your computer is far better than mine, but the reason this confuses me is the fact it didn't lag on windows ME, so its not my system...

Seems to be OS differences between XP and ME and how they work.

    Lag

The lag you are experiencing is due to memory. 256MB is plenty to run the game, but as soon as you alt+tab out of it, it puts the game into virtual memory. With the game in virtual memory ("held" in place on a temporary paging file on your hard drive), as soon as you alt+tab back into the game, it loads it back into real memory. This causes lag unless you have extremely fast (266MHz DDR) memory or faster. Also, it might help to upgrade the video card...

Forgot to add that the ME operating system is made to run slower memory more effectively. XP uses significantly more system resources.

Windows XP apparently uses alot more ram than Windows ME, so more would help definately.

Maybe Disabling some services would be good too (see Black viper Guide)

I had the same problem before when I had 256 megs of ram. I upgraded to 512 and now I can alt-tab without delay.

Yeah I had the same problem it's definately memory related. I think when you only have 256 meg or less windows writes a load of system stuff thats not used out to the page file. Then when you alt-tab it has to read it all back into memory again and there's your delay.

Sometimes my PC will arbitrarily reboot when I restore Diablo from minimized.

    I love it!

Hm you should try to get 256 additional RAM, I think it would help you out. Also your graphics card is sub-standard even for an old game for D2. You could get a used Geforce 2 MX or something for very very cheap :)

Are you using a Geforce graphics card? If so, I believe I know the problem. It's the drivers. The latest ones really messed up D2 for me. I think the best ones for it are 44.03, http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_44.03.html

Unfortunately, this can cause problems with newer games. I solved that though. I don't play newer games.
