    Wind Druid Merc Question

K first of all, I have really no knowledge on mercs, that's why I posted here. I have a Wind druid with my main attacks as hurricane and just plain ol' smackin the baddies. But since Hurricane is mainly cold damage, it wouldn't make much sense to use a Holy Freeze merc. So what are other viable alternatives? Please feel free to post your opinions.

    t.t Mainly hurricane? Try tornado.
Act 1 fire mercs are nice.

Well so far I have about 6 or 7 points to Tornado, and I just maxed Hurricane, so I will work on that right now and Cyclone Armor. I'm havin a hard time aiming Tornado, it looks to be random. So you say an Act 1 Fire? Starting in norm? NM? I thought the Act 1 mercs were pretty much useless?

The reason Fire rogues are great are

    1) You deal Phys/Cold dmg, so you would need another source of dmg for Immunes.

    2) Ranged so they don't die easily.

    3) Well give them a witchwild string and lots of ias and you pretty much have a necro casting amp.

K I'll give it a shot...I'm a lvl 42 right now and I just started nm...should I pick up a nm fire chick or go back to norm and build her up?

The way I see it, you can go one of two ways... you can be in front, your merc in back, or your merc in front, with you in back.

The former strategy uses an act 1 merc for maximum effectiveness. The latter would probably use either a defiance merc or a barb. The advantages of option 1 are listed above. The advantages of option 2 are that your merc acts as a tank, keeping you safe while you cast, and more damage potential. However, you'd have to choose equipment for your merc carefully, since CI/PIs can be very pesky. Basically just give him a weapon with monumental fire/lit damage and you should be able to deal with those immunes.

Would an Act3 lightning Merc be a viable choice? I've always wanted a build with a lightning merc and I think it would go nicely with a wind druid build (you know, wind and lightning, like a storm....yea).

Lightning merc might work ok. Rogues probably do more damage, though.

    But it's up to you.

Oh, and Welcome to the Druid Forum :D

I've never used one myself, but I've heard that Act 3 Lightning Mercs are pretty useless.

Yup, that's true... Most people go with Cold mercs. Even Blizzard sorcs use them, their Ice Blast and Glacial Spike freeze them and stuff, so it's much easier for some characters (melee'ers in particular).

I think a Hurricane, Sage, and CArmor are already enough protection, so yeah, a rogue merc is better. Unless you're HC, then you need a tank anyways.

Lightning mercs are useless... take this advice from someone who used one (although briefly) in act 3 normal. Widely varying damage and slower cast rate than all other act 3 mercs = dead merc very quickly. I had to bail him out constantly even in normal difficulty. Don't use this hireling under any circumstances.

Well dang. All this negative feedback towards the lightning merc...

Wouldn't equiping him with some fast cast gear elimante the slow casting problem? And I know of the varying damage properties of lighting. Comes with the packaging.

I just thought lightning would look cool with a wind druid. If I want effectiveness, I'll play my hammerdin or summoner. I just want to have fun with this build.

But if lightning does indeed suck as bad as you guys say, I may reconsider.

    I think
    Griffons eye with facet
    Vipermagi with facet
    6x facet crystal sword
Pretty good damage with their charged bolt (lots of bolts)

Tornado aiming isn't random at all, they just follow a zigzag path a la Charged Bolt.

There are a finite number of paths they can follow (24 or so?) and the game chooses a best-fit path based on where you're clicking. Sometimes the enemies will be in a "blind spot" where you can't hit them, and in this case you will want to move. :)
