Willie Pep, 1922-2006

Former featherweight champion and 1990 Hall Of Fame inductee, Willie Pep, died Thursday in Rockville, CT after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. The elusive Will-o'-the-Wisp compiled a record of 230-11-1 (65) over a 26-year career. He also served in both the Army and Navy during WWII and received an honorable discharge in 1944. Pep (born Guglielmo Papaleo) was a premier defender. Legend has it (with the support of noted historian Bert Sugar) that he unanimously won a round against Jackie Graves in 1946 without having thrown a single punch. Most afficianados (myself included) place him in the top five to ten pound-for-pound in the modern era.

Thank you for the tidbit. I've always viewed the "little guys" as more impressive fighters than the heavyweights - yes, they don't put as much weight behind the punch, but with having less reach and having to rely on mobility to greater extent the fights tend to be somewhat more interesting to watch on average; you don't have to see title matches to see 1337 skillz.
