Will Deckard Cain Die?

Will Deckard Cain Die?

I ask this mainly because of the following:
  1. Blizzard has mentioned that Diablo 3 will be the end of the current arc of the series.
  2. Cain is normally depicted as the sort of 'narrator' of the game. But in the Diablo 3 trailer, the narrator was a new character named Leah.
  3. Leah appears to be a NPC directly related with Cain and is heavily speculated to be an important character.
  4. Blizzard doesn't shy away from killing off major characters to make way for new ones.

Basically, the way I see it, Leah may be being groomed to replace Deckard Cain as the game's narrator in subsequent titles. The reason for this is time. With twenty years having passed since the first two games, Cain is without doubt remarkably old given the average life span in-game. Given that Cain probably won't live long enough for the next game should significant time pass between them (such as in the case between Diablo 2 and 3), it could be seen as better use of the character to have him killed off memorably to further the plot and add 'drama'.

1. ... doesn't really suggest his death
2. doesn't matter as Marius did the cut scenes for D2
3. speculation? I haven't heard this, even so it doesn't suggest his death.
4. I don't think it has anything to do with 'making way' and more to show the brutality of sanctuary.

I actually do think Cain will die, perhaps the PC will even see it as being partially their fault. Somehow I think this Leah will believe it to be hers, prolly 'cause she was off with the PC.

One of the questions/complaints in the StarCraft II lore panal was about killing npcs and bringing them back all the time in Blizzard's games. (wow:kel'thud, syilvannos? - starcraft: phoenix, kerrigan)
Even if Cain dies in D3 you can expect him to come back at some point, and with wings on his back probably!

Look at the last page of Cain's diary, it's slashed with claws. I think Cain turned into a prime evil. I always knew he was evil (switching people's Stones of Jordan for Manald Heals during the "identification process", etc...)

But..... why would Cain need the 2,000,000,000 Sojs that everyone has found? He's not that selfish.... For the dclone perhaps? Not likely..... unless he pokes its' eyes out with his walking cain and trips him a few times into the river of flame.
As for Cain being evil.... I don't know.... it's plausable.... but it gives me the same feeling as Tyrael being evil... and that as sour as Cain's toes..... those dirty.... dirty.... sandles......

SPOILERS!

Cain carries something that LOOKS like a shard of the worldstone which is actually his future soulstone ;) He will trap himself into that and possess Diablo himself, that's why it won't be "Diablo IV" but "Cain I"

Twenty years should be enough to teach someone the basics of being a Horadrim.
Besides that, I wouldn't mind Cain Dieing, i always thought he was kind of weird and creepy...

Re: Will Deckard Cain Die?

When the D3 announcement was made I speculated on it as the final part of a Trilogy (and was flamed for it at the time). If D3 is, as the OP stated, the final part of this 'arc of Diablo' I will reinstate my theory.

With the final part of a trilogy certain things may come into play.

1. Something we all took to be true will turn out to be false. (Cain is in fact evil, currupt and has been stringing us along all the time???)

2. There will be a huge twist in the tail (Cain becomes the reincarnation of the prime evils and is in fact the endgame boss???)

3. Given that we have all killed the Prime evils in D2 a new evil must rise if the series is to continue (why not a corrupt Cain???)

Will Deckard Cain die?......Yes he will IMO and he will rise again as the epitimy of evil in D4, D5 etc. The story will continue and, on a personal note, if he says 'Stay a while and listen' one more time I'll kill the old codger myself.

I hate Cain because of all those times he harassed my chrs, walking up to them, following them around with that exclamation point over his head until you finally break down and talk to him.

THEN, he makes that idiot light quest log icon show up on your screen. So then you have to click that to get rid of it.

I want Cain dead for good and I want in on it.

Re: Will Deckard Cain Die?

how OLD is he?! like 400? i personally dont think cain is human, firstly because he is like 400 years old and DOESNT have Alzheimer, second because he can identify EVERYTHING, and humans can't know all that much about so many subjects, and for some reason he refuses to die.

also, i want him to die, i never liked him much, i have a feeling he would be one of those old people who would get a city ordinance passed to ban skateboarding on sidewalks.

Re: Will Deckard Cain Die?

Diablo should corrupt Cain and take him out like Baal did with Tal Rasha....or did he? heh. Cain should die just for the fact that all he does is hang out in camp while we do all the work. I would imagine a Horadrim would be a useful merc but not Cain, then again I think I would get annoyed with the voiceovers.

Naaa, I can't see Cain being corrupt like that. I could see Tyrael being corrupt though, banished from heaven for destroying the worldstone, ect. But I digress, that's a theory for a different thread.

Re: Will Deckard Cain Die?

It needs to be remembered that Blizzard chose the names for its characters for a reason (even if they are completely avoiding the real world heaven and hell aspects) and the name Cain is a very important name (as in Cain and Abel).

Since Cain is named after the first murderer (according to the Bible), and the Biblical Cain was thought by people in the Middle Ages to have sired terrible, horrible creatures (in Beowulf, Grendel and Grendel's Mother are both said to be descendants of Cain), it is very reasonable to assume that Deckard Cain will end up being evil/corrupt in some way...which, of course, would most likely lead to his death and possible reincarnation.

Re: Will Deckard Cain Die?

Oh something do puzzles me abt Deckard Cain back in Diablo 2.

When the heroes of Diablo 2 reach Tristam, they were told to rescue Cain. How would Akara knows that Cain is the only survivor in Tristam? Even more interesting is among all npcs in Diablo 1, why is Cain the sole survivor?

Well becoz he is the only survivor in the tradegy of Tristam (maybe apart from Adria), I do suspect that he has some tricks in his sleeve. The rest were murdered and Grisworld was corrupted. But Cain was left to die in the cage???

Hehehe doesn't make sense to me. Mebbe the demons wanted his horadim knowledge badly. Otherwise I dun get it why would he get special treatment from the rest of Tristam townsfolk.
