I love using it for general knowledge questions. Want to know what a dingledangle is? Search Wiki for it, and it'll usually come up, and with enough facts that give you a general idea about it.

I've never used Wiki as a source, since it wasn't available in my paper writing days.

if wiki can scratch the surface and give you the basics of the subject and then direct you to resources where you can study further, then it has done its job

...Wikipedia is unreliable and "broken beyond repair", co-founder Larry Sanger said.

Mind you, Sanger has something of an axe to grind as he's just launched his own encyclopaedia, citizendium.org...

    seems a pointless discussion imho.

Wikipedia should be used like any other encyclopedia. Encyclopedias generally shouldn't be cited, but they should be used to get a jump on the issue and find more relevant, in-depth sources.

I've found that for major events Wikipedia's news coverage is actually better than most news outlets in terms of comprehensiveness and response time. Nothing like sheer numbers to make up the difference.

That's absolutely right on. It's even funnier today when kids just cut and paste things for papers. Any educator worth any salt can spot writing that doesn't quite match a students or their ability. Teachers can also use the net kids. Cut a suspicious sentence out and search it. I always loved finding exact matches. Seeing the look on the cheater's face when he gets back a zero and he fails your course is Master Card priceless. Especially when they can't figure out how you figured it out and they still try to deny it.

I'm yet to see something false on wikipedia. Everything has their source clearly marked and if it doesn't have one that's noted as well.

There's also that one Turnitin.com site or something.

Good thing I found how to go around that (and searches) and I happily copied and pasted my way through high school with no one to bother me.

I narc'ed on one of my graduate professors for the same issue. I'm paying tons of cash to earn my degree; I'm not about to let someone pass judgment on me who lifts his lectures in whole paragraphs from the Internet.

    James Brown is dead.

You know, that doesn't really work anymore.

Kids these days, what a terrible education. They should do the honest thing like I used to, get out twenty books with appropriate-sounding titles, cite them all while only actually using the preface from one of them.

You mean "while only actually using the first sentence of the preface from one of them, expanded out into a three-page paper of BS and fluff." right?

No way I'm putting all the effort to write BS and fluff of my own, that's what the preface is for.

You read 20-30% slower online. Thus the reason I prefer looking at printed out materials at work. Screw the trees I want 30% higher efficiency.

With my ninja like skills at copy/paste I've never read an entire book in my life. I skim through it a bit, get the important stuff so i can properly bs in class/essays. the reports were all copy/paste.

so none of this weak 30% efficiency, my method was cooler :azn:

Sounds about like how we do it for law review articles.
