Widowmaker - ed vs +skills (what's the difference?)

Hi all. I'm having a hard time understanding why a +5 widowmaker (regardless of stats) is valued alot more than a +3 widowmaker with possible high ed.

+1 ga makes 5% ed. So I would think that the total damage of a 180/5 and a 185/4 on the same char would be the same. But perhaps there's a difference between ed from a skill and ed from an item?!?

Plz help me getting this puzzle solved

Well, first of all, there is a difference in how damage is calculated.

On-weapon %ED and skill %ED is calculated in different parts of the damage formula. Very basically, it goes:

[weapon base dmg * (1 + weapon %ed)] * [1 + statsbonus + skill %ed]

For instance, Ward Bow has a base average damage of 36.5. And using your examples, we have WidowmakerA 185/4, and WidowmakerB 180/5. Let's also assume Dex = 150. Slvl 4 GA = 15% Skill ED, and Slvl 5 GA = 20% Skill ED.

WidowmakerA: (36.5*2.85) * (1 + 1.5 + 0.15) = 275.666
WidowmakerB: (36.5*2.80) * (1 + 1.5 + 0.20) = 275.940

Which is virtually not much difference. But... let's throw in a "Fortitude" in there as well. The 300% ED on "Fortitude" counts as skill %ED.

WidowmakerA: (36.5*2.85) * (1 + 1.5 + 3.15) = 587.741
WidowmakerB: (36.5*2.80) * (1 + 1.5 + 3.20) = 582.540

And it actually turns out, realistically (more points in Dexterity, other +min/max damage sources such as charms, more skill %ED), the 185/4 has more damage output than the 180/5.

So to answer your question as to why the a +5 Widowmaker with low %ED is worth more than a +3 with high %ED, it's because:
1) I have done my math wrong somewhere and I'm totally wrong, thus I am an idiot.
2) People enjoy the lower mana cost of the +5 GA (-0.3 mana cost/Slvl).
3) People are idiots who have no idea how the game works.
4) People overestimate the amount of skill %ed that GA gives.

WidowmakerB: (36.5*2.80) * (1 + 1.5 + 0.20) = 275.940
Commonly used on a bvc let me work it out with charms. Let's say barb use enigma and a total of +100 max damage from charms and maybe a jewel from the gear.

A (86.5*2.85) * (1 + 1.5 + 0.15) = 653.29 3GA 185 ed
B (86.5*2.80) * (1 + 1.5 + 0.20) = 653.94 4GA 180 ed

Almost the same and If fort was calculated in with the max damage charms the higher ed on bow would still produce more damage.

3) People are idiots who have no idea how the game works.
4) People overestimate the amount of skill %ed that GA gives.

One of those I guess :coffee:

e\
I forgot that +skill can be a factor too.
1 from bc
1 from anni
1 from highlords
1 from arach
2 from enigma

Let's see if that makes a difference.
+6 total so thats +30ed more on GA skill

A (86.5*2.85) * (1 + 1.5 + 0.45) = 727.25
B (86.5*2.80) * (1 + 1.5 + 0.50) = 726.6

With fort

A (86.5*2.85) * (1 + 1.5 + 3.45) = 1462.58
B (86.5*2.80) * (1 + 1.5 + 3.50) = 1453.2

Both favor the 3GA 185ed again.

i think you've hit the nail right on the head.

in this case, more on wep %ed is much, MUCH more important than a piddling extra 20% off weapon %ed.

gimme a 200/+1GA over a 160/+5 any day.
