Why you should never mess with IT (Computer) folks in your office...

Someone was really getting into my nerves this week so I decided to teach him a lesson. Since most people aren't even aware of how their computer looks like, I switched this guy's computer -- a Pentium III/800 -- to an old Pentium II. Funny thing is he didn't even see the difference except that his computer had become utterly slow. So he comes and complains to me that his computer is really slow today. I told him it must be the Internet and that his problem is normal on a Friday. He left and stopped bugging me. I occasionally look over where he's at and see how frustrated he's getting. If he tries to be nice to me I'll give him back the other computer.

It's very rare I get into this kind of mood with anybody. I'm glad my revengeful tendencies happen only once in several years. But someone's got to teach people like this a lesson. Not because he's a lawyer and I'm an IT dude gives him the right to be major rude and disrespectful.

Can't say I'm horribly impressed with such an attitude. I'd say that he isn't the only one acting like a jerk.

I doubt you really taught this guy a lesson. What did he learn from the experience? Nothing, he's none the wiser. It is pretty funny though. When do ya plan to give him his old one back?

I once pulled this on someone at work :

Took a screenshot of the desktop, saved it, and then hid the desktop icons and then put up the screenshot as the new background.

So it looked like the icons were still there but clicking did nothing at all ;)

Hahaha, that's exactly what my friends and I would do to our networking instructor. We werent supposed to be working on anything else besides the networking cirriculum, so we'd take screenshots of our home computers with Kazaa or a game running then take the icons and past em on top of it. We'd just hide the icons on the school computer, put up the screenshot as wallpaper, and wait for the instructor to walk by (hopefully when we were away from the computer). And when he did come by to check what we were doing, he'd see the program/game/whatever and get all worked up and click on the non-functioning icons furiously. As soon as he realized what was going on we'd all have a good laugh, including the instructor.

Eh, that's nice and all, but you wont be a real BOFH until you wire the skin of his desk lamp directly to the mains... *BZZZT!*... One less idiot in the world.

If you really wanted to teach the guy a lesson you'd set up his real comp so that it wouldn't let him send email until he typed a written apology for bumping into you in the elevator. (least I hope it's the same guy)

He's basically very rude. He's the type who will just come up to my face and say: "I need a new mouse." And wait until I actually give him one. Several times he'd just come in my room (even while I'm having lunch) and ask me to replace paper in the printer (and did not leave until I actually helped him).

I always help people. I never complain when I'm doing what I'm supposed to do in matters of my job description. But when people like this jerk can't ask for stuff nicely it really upsets me. It's bad enough when 9 out 10 people never say THANK YOU, it's worse when they can't even muster up to even say "HI" before they ask me for something. Thankfully he's an exceptional case. Otherwise I don't think I would have last 4 years in this company if there were more like him.

You work there for a living? Your non-professional attitude surprises me.
Yes I admit I am being very unprofessional and a jerk to this guy. I've probably deigned to his level, maybe lower. But in the four years I've been with this organization I've done something this extreme three times to three horrible people. Those three share the same attitude I detest the most: lack of courtesy and respect and that heighted ego that, just because they're lawyers, they think they can push around the IT dude. Guess again.

Wow, you sure showed him. I bet he'll never mess with you again.

As stupid as you portray him to be, he should have no trouble noticing the obvious connection between "slow computer" and "vengeful IT personnel".

Generally, it is not such a good idea to teach lessons to people who have the power to fire you (or get you fired.)

Nice one Aragorn. I'll probably keep that as my Trump card if he doesn't shape up next week. I know he has mega deadlines next week...I hope I won't have to do another round of revenge tactics. It's fun to watch rude people get more frustated.

Oh well. Hopefully the holidays will also soothe my nerves a bit. It's been a long week with our email server almost going out of commission. I think in the last four years the last two weeks have been the most stressful to me.

THANK MICROSOFT FOR NOT INDICATING THAT EXCHANGE 2000 SERVER HAS A 16 GB LIMIT ON THE DATABASE. GRRR Microsoft. After taking two Exchange classes, nowhere does it say or was it mentioned that Exchange 2000 Standard had a 16GB limit.

raff, you can put all your replies into a single post. Easier on the brain. ;)
Oops. Sorry. It's easier to hit REPLY than have to scroll back and forth to read what people have written. Won't do again.

Raffster, although other people seem mortified that you did this to the jerk at your office, I think it's hilarious, although like others have pointed out, you aren't really solving the problem. I would suggest a more direct approach, such as confronting him about his bad attitude and how a simple please goes a long way.

If you need other ideas for how to play more jokes at the office all you need to do is ask, lol.

Just put gay porn (no offence intended mods) all over his computer, even in the most unexpected places. You might lose your job but it would be so freakin hilarious to to see the look on his face! :D :p

Unfortunately in this case that won't be a good idea. The jerk is as gay as it can get. I even think he likes me -- he gives me that really funny look whenever he's in the server room -- I almost feel sexually abused. Hahaha. Anyway putting gay porn on his desktop might actually do the opposite. I have nothing against gay people per se but gay people like this one is definitely a loser.
