The selection of words that are filtered is pretty stupid. As is the whole concept of censoring specific potentially abusable words.

Censoring as a whole is pointless in my opinion. Everyone guesses the censored word anyway so it's still spelt out in the brain (the horror). The asterisks just make for a more difficult read.

It's censored to prevent abuse of the word.

Personally, I just bypass the word filter when using those words, since I never use them in an inappropriate context anyway.

That's why just triggering or bypassing the word filter isn't allowed, strictly spoken. Things are currently handled a bit more relaxed in the OTF, however. You won't get me involved into a debate about censorship, however

AFAIK the word filter is at its default settings. I agree that filtering words blindly is not overly intelligent, in particular not with a rather incomplete list, but computer programs aren't known for being clever. It always depends on the context and the most vile insults are those which don't use abusive words at all, so effective moderation of problematic postings doesn't work automatically anyway.

If you want a bigger list of words for the word filter, send it to Elly.

The problem with wordfilters these days is that a lot of people can't spell properly so you still get a lot of rubbish in which is equally offensive as the banned words, just with a slightly worse spelling.

Here's a test, this is, or at least was, a name of someone that I come across while I was doing family history: Gaynor Gaylord. I also noticed that, on some forums, *** is censored but arse isn't, and I, being an Aussie, cannot speak for very long without saying the word bugger, another word that gets censored a lot too.

Edit: lol, donkey variant doesn't get through. Gaynor Gaylord gets though, but I bet my grade 2 teacher, *** Taylor, wont.

used to be you couldnt say ****** on this forum, wonder if its still true (yes it is!)

also some words are censored on their own and other are censored in any context

like if you said Gaylord, no censor

then theres ****take mushroom or stupid****face hey look that one got taken out

it gets really annoying on say the official WoW forums where rape is blanket censored, so you cant even say grape without it coming out g#$%
