why use grand charms, i would think that small charms would be better cause they take up less space in the inventory? or does gc's give better bonuses?

Generally (with some exceptions of course) three small charms give indeed better yield per square, however the main usage of grand charms are +skills which can only spawn on them, not on either of the smaller charms types.

You kind of answered your own question there.

Smaller is actually better as far as Charms are concerned, however, some Magic Prefixes and Suffixes are only available on the larger Charms.
