Who remembers that old movie "The Lawnmower Man"?

I remember i saw this with my dad when i was younger, and well it scared me to death back then, but i remember thinking the virtual reality scenes in it were so cool and so realistic. Like it was the coolest technology movie i have ever seen. So my dad got me the game for Super Nintendo, and man i was hooked on that, even though it was stupidly hard.

But who remembers it? I want to re-watch it again because if i remember right i saw it maybe 7-8 years ago, and i still liked it. It had a really good plot. But i just watched a few scenes on Youtube, and man its ridiculous looking at the special effects from that movie now. Thinking "OH MY GOD THIS IS SO COOL" back then, and look at what we have now.

So im just discussing the movie itself, and how drastically technology has changed since its release in 1992.

It's not old if it's got Virtual reality in it.
Old is Black and White or Technicolor

i remember it. it's got jeff fahey (sp?) in it, he is cool. the sequal sucked, but it did have mat frewer in it basically reprising his role as max headroom (not really, but the similarities are there).

Try watching the first Jurassic Park again - Compared to the special effects now the dinosaurs look like the plastic ones in black and white movies from the 50's.

You're crazy. With the exception of the raptors in the kitchen scene, the special effects still look good.

Best line in the movie happened at the gas station when the lady said "I look forward to having my lawn mowed"

No movie with CGI in it is truly old (even amusing 1st gen CGI). Just like no game in VGA or above is truly old. Damn kids...

Anyway, I have it in on DVD. It's still the same, quite good, not amazing.

Access denied access denied access denied access denied access denied access denied access denied access denied access denied access denied... access granted.

No, the best line is when Pierce Brosnan says Jobe's progress is amazing because he learned Latin in a few hours and it took him a year just to learn the Latin alphabet.

Did it really? I never saw it, just heard about the suck.

Exactly. The raptors in the kitchen weren't that bad... only a few shots look fake.

How about TRON... all done with optical effects (except one tiny scene that actually looks faker than all the others)... now that's impressive. I think it has the most optical effects of any movie, actually.

OK - it was a bit of an overstatement, but looking back I remember at the time everyone was "OMFG THE DINOSAURS LOK SO REAL" when if a movie with the same graphics came out now people would assume the producers ran out of funds when it came time to make the dinosaurs.

I should mention I kinda like the old dinosaur movies with the plastic dinos. Same for the old space alien movies. In some ways CGI killed the Sci-Fi movie genre by making it all about graphics rather than story, acting or atmosphere.

I'm kinda dreading seeing the new "The Day the Earth Stood Still", for example. The posters and clips I've seen makes me think they butchered the original then shat on the remains.

Though Keanu Reeves is a good choice for this movie but he's mis-cast, he's mechanical enough the be Gort.

i refuse to see the day the earth stood still. as for special effects killing scifi, bull****. you can still find amazingly good sci fi. most of it isnt in movies though, a lot of good sci fi is on TV now. a lot of it can be crap too, but still.

ray harryhausen still holds up.

Keanu seems to have gotten himself mis-typecast.

CGI killed most genres... although they might've been just as **** anyway and it's just a coincidence.

Meh... I lost interest in TV scifi for ages, then Firefly came along and wow!, and now back to no interest.

Harryhausen rocks.

I hate the new Dr Who. Since when is Dr Who minstrel?

One or two episodes seemed pretty good, I thought Rose was a good companion but they kept ruining it. In the end I gave up.

Firefly was awesome, I wish they had never cancelled it.

Jurassic Park still looks great, with only a few bad scenes (mostly close-ups iirc). Infact I think the Dinosaurs in that look far better than the ones in newer films like the new King Kong. I think the effects in the original Star Wars beat the new ones. In the new ones they look instantly computer generated.

I liked the lawnmower man and I think the bad CGI in it does not matter as even in the film its not meant to be "real".
