Whirlwind "golden age" in classic

I've heard that whirlwind barbarians were really overpowered in D2 classic. What was the patch where they ruled the most and why?

It's because in older patches ww worked different. It was hitting at a set frame rate and completely independent of ias. So you could take the heaviest most damaging 2-hander avaliable (the ones that are usually sloooow) and still hit as fast as you would to with 200 ias. The set speed was also REALLY fast.
A minus is that a lot of good weapon and weapon types didn't exist :)

Exactly. I had a beautiful rare Martel de Fer on my ww mace barb back then and owned the mobs

And if one were to recreate this overpowered hegemony in SP, what would be the best patch for that?

Also, it seems that whirlwind was overpowered compared other builds, not comparing to post-lod builds. From searching around, it seems that (pre-lod) classic was extremely hard in many ways (I myself remember having to work for lvl 30 a lot with my bowazon back in the day). So...

My question is: would pre-lod classic whirlwind barbarian be overpowered by todays standards? Even if you got him to lvl 30 and managed to find a good weapon?

IIRC, in 1.00, yes, the first release version, you need very old disc's to do this (like me :smug:), ww is set at once per frame, meaning a 1fpa attack, or 25 times per second. This is obviously insanely fast. If this suffers from any of those server-client side bugs I'll leave unsaid. The problem is that there are no lances (and ofc no elite's). Another thing to mentiuon is that some 2-handers are bugged to do their "one handed" damage, which in some cases is 1-1. Be sure to read up on what's what before you try a patch this old. The information is rare but there's some in the SPF.

1.04(-ish, I can't really remember, but around here). ww was at (iirc) 4 fpa. Still insanely fast. Is more stable and has lances (one of the more desirable weapons for the old ww, since its slow, has great damage and range)

Before I forget to mention, early versions are early version. There are bugs. It's also harder. The diablo we have today (1.13, or really all the stable versions of 1.10+) is a real cake walk compared to the older patches, though not just this one in particular. You might face unique monters that you never though you'd fight in your worst nightmares.

Lastly: No. You won't be able to compare a 1.00-1.05 character with todays standards. No matter how good of a rare you'll find you will be way behind the over powered runewords that exist today, and you don't even have stable mercs in classic!
I can't see any pre. expansion barbarian even compete with a decked out dual grief/forti/might merc/charms barbarian of today.

Don't go back to an old patch because you want to be even more OP than in 1.13, do it because it's a completely different gaming experience! I'm currently playing 1.00 with a barbarian and a necro. The barbarian killed diablo at level 26 in normal and he's currently parked at level 28 because I want to level to 30 before nm, but it's soooo slow.

cheers

Thanks for an interesting answer, zarfen. That's pretty much what I've gathered. Even if whirlwind was crazy in 1.00, it's hard to get to lvl 30 and there's other insane things to "balance it out" - it's still overpowered compared to other builds, but on today's standards not so much..

I preordered D2 and have the discs somewhere, so I might try it. I just need to prepare and have the right mentality :) What do you kill monsters with before lvl 30? Do you pick masteries? Any word what 2-handed weapon wasn't bugged in 1.00? I'd still like to experience what oldskool players are talking about, since I was pretty much the worst noob out there at that time (13 years old, go figure).

Sigon's set + Civerb's Cudgel will bring you all the way up to 30... and in classic, beyond that.
