    which merc

Which merc to use with my tri-element sorc (orb/FW/lit)?

she just entered A1 NM, so once she reached A2, I will face the big question.

    HF or her current Def?

twinked go defiance with say stone, vamp gaze and reapers toll for awesome defensive option.
untwinked i'd say go holy freeze to give you that extra spell spamming time in combat.

an eth or an upp'd duriel is still a good set-up for a def merc.

I find Defiance merc better for running bosses. I've always found HF merc better for normal play, and If you use a damage/second exposed spell (i.e. Fire wall, meteor, etc) the HF works very well for it.

However if your defiance merc can tank a heavy mob maybe it has the same effect. I like the cold pulse effect when teleporting too, putting the enemies on recovery animation lets me teleport away safely with enough fcr even if I accidentally teleport into a dangerous pack...

This is, of cours IMHO :D

    /Agree

In EverQuest, the single most potent debuff (in many players' opinions) was the "slow" category, mainly shaman and enchanter spells. The reason was, it could reduce a monster (aka "mob" in EQ lingo) to like 30% (maybe lower, can't remember) of its base attack rate. Whether or not these spells were landed in a timely fashion frequently determined whether a group would have another standard pull, or a full-blown CR effort lasting hours.

A completely different line of EQ spells was movement-reduction, a.k.a. snare. Likewise, your group's success or failure frequently would hinge on whether a_drood_039 remembered to snare that pesky froglok. :uhhuh:

I've always been of the opinion that Diablo 2's cold effects are a bit too powerful. The reason? They combine "slow" and "snare" into one effect. With the HF aura, the entire visible screen is slowed and snared every few seconds, rendering many otherwise formidable challenges into easily manageable frays.

As far as survivability, my HF merc almost never dies, even with crappy gear. Teleport is a wonderful way to curb Gulzar's enthusiasm!
