Which Grey Socketable Weapons and Armor Are best To Use?

I am finding many different kinds of grey items with sockets. Some have one socket, some more than one. I do not know what items are the best for making a rune word.

I am in hell difficulty and when i find the proper runes needed, then i will want to make the rune word, but which armor is best, which weapons are best to put the runes in? Is there an online resource that explains this?

There are many, many thread on the subject here; use google: "<runeword I like> base site:diablo.incgamers.com".

If you specific runewords in mind, go ahead and list them here!

Also, there's a good chance that checking various trade value threads will indicate which are most used, and hopefully those are most used because they are the best.

also i need to know if a grey armor with sockets can be upgraded using the cube? like if i find a low level armor with 4 sockets, can i use a cube recipe to upgrade it to the elite armor version, then put the rune word in it to make the special armor?

The best armor for CoH is the one with the highest defense you can wear (that wont raise your str requirements unnecessarily). If you want to consider resale value aswell, the most common picks are Archon Plate or Dusk Shroud.

About your other question: No, grey items cannot be upgraded. Only rares and uniques.

thanks Butchie for the quick reply. I was also wondering which runeword armor spell is the flat out best? the more i look at them the more unsure i am. for instance there is one that has a thorns aura, and one that lets you teleport..

i am a paladin using holy shield, fanaticism and zeal. and i am also thinking of using it on any other char' class i might create later.

Enigma is considered the ultimate amor runeword because of the +1 to teleport. Chains of Honor and Fortitude are also top line armor runewords, but it all boils down to what chars do you want to use it on.
For example if you want to use a non-sorceress character for magic finding, it'll benefit greatly from the teleport on enigma. Other chars may prefer resistances from CoH over teleport.

Bobo's thread is still very relevant here.

    http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=516296

Remember medium and heavy armours and shields have a frw penalty which may or may not be important.

15% ED elite light armours with 3 or 4 sockets will be rarer than high runes this ladder if it is only going to be 6 months long.

I read Zealing Paladins love to use the Rune Words: Grief and Exile.
I looked and saw the Rune Word Destruction and it looks as good or better then Grief.

Is Grief better for some reason?

    -----------------------------
    Grief
    5 Socket Axes/Swords
    Eth • Tir • Lo • Mal • Ral
    Level Requirement: 59

35% Chance To Cast Level 15 Venom On Striking
    +30-40% Increased Attack Speed (varies)
    Damage +340-400 (varies)
    Ignore Target's Defense
    -25% Target Defense
+1.875-185.625% Damage To Demons (+1.875% Per Character Level)
    Adds 5-30 Fire Damage
-20-25% To Enemy Poison Resistance (varies)
    20% Deadly Strike
    Prevent Monster Heal
+2 To Mana After Each Kill
+10-15 Life After Each Kill (varies)
    -----------------------------------------

    -----------------------------------------
    Destruction
    5 Socket Polearms/Swords
    Vex • Lo • Ber • Jah • Ko
    Level Requirement: 65

23% Chance To Cast Level 12 Volcano On Striking
5% Chance To Cast Level 23 Molten Boulder On Striking
100% Chance To Cast level 45 Meteor When You Die
15% Chance To Cast Level 22 Nova On Attack
    +350% Enhanced Damage
    Ignore Target's Defense
    Adds 100-180 Magic Damage
    7% Mana Stolen Per Hit
    20% Chance Of Crushing Blow
    20% Deadly Strike
    Prevent Monster Heal
    +10 To Dexterity

Re: Which Grey Socketable Weapons and Armor Are best To Use?

Yes, Grief has Damage +(340-400), not +(340-400)%. So it adds a HUGE raw number in damage, not a percentage.

Suppose we make one of each in a Phase Blade. It has 31-35 base damage.
A Destruction would end up doing (31-35)*4.5 = 139-157 damage
A Grief would end up doing from 371-375 to 431-435 damage, depending on how good the roll is.

The difference is of course slightly smaller if we do them in a weapon that does more damage (because the +350% gets a bigger boost), but they aren´t as fast as a Phase Blade, and no one-handed weapon type does anywhere near the base damage for the runewords to be comparable for damage.

i thought they were doing it because of the spells mostly. but you are right about that +dmg, it's way better

i wonder if one were to add in all the magic and average elemental dmg each sword hits with it seems like destruction gets a little closer to grief. and if you were fighting monsters
immune to physical dmg, destruction would kill them faster?

there are some better weapons for zealots, grief is common expecially for smiters, because +dmg in grief rw can increase smite dmg a lot...

Re: Which Grey Socketable Weapons and Armor Are best To Use?

i just tried out smite for the first time last night. i only have 1 point in it but i think it's at 4 from skill boost items i wear. Anyway i was surprised at how effective it is against the main enemy you are attacking. i noticed though it doesn't work at all against monsters with physical immunity.

i wonder if i should toss any spare points along the way towards higher smite? i am almost at lvl 89. was planning on throwing the rest into sacrifice for synergy with zeal i think. of course when i really think about it, i am unsure i will be able to get this guy to 99. i might be too impatient if the leveling is slow.

Smite is a 1pt wonder skill. Dont invest more points into smite if its not your main attack.

what's smite like if you max it to 20? is it pretty sick with all the synergies and deals radical dmg? seems like its unbeatable even at just level 4. the monster can't do anything but stand there in a daze.

More damage, longer stun. But it's not really that great against big crowds. Your killing speed will be much better with Zeal when dealing with packs of monsters. Just 1pt in smite for the bosses.
