    Which console?

I know it's a little late to start getting a console (playstation 4 is probably out), but since I'm bored and I got some $$ laying around I want a console to put in my room.

Through hours of research and interpretive analysis I've narrowed my choice down to three consoles:

    XBox, PS2, and Gamecube.

This is probably a very old argument repeated many times, but for old time's sake, which one is better? Include some pros and cons. Here is my look on things (as you read the degree of my knowledge concerning this area is transparent)

    XBox:

-Lots of technological features that I don't know how to use
    -New and Improved controller
-Best graphics out of the three (so I've heard)

    PS2:
    -???

    Gamecube:

-Will easily fit into small cardboard boxes

    Console? Bah! PC! PC!

Once you have D2 and Civ3, you don't need anything else.

Well I have both of those games, and they are played out. My computer is a dungheap, so new games are pretty hard to run.

I really have to recommend the Xbox.. I was a big skeptic until I saw Morrowind on it, and then got one, and now am firmly hooked. Hardware wise its bloody cood, the Xbox Live thing will be a good laugh (once I have the cash to sign up), and the games are amazing.. Morrowind, D&D Heroes, Legacy of Kain, Halo, Splinter Cell, Freedom Fighters, Arx Fatalis, Fable.. the list of great stuff goes on and on...

OK, I know squat about consoles since I have the reflexes of a dead oak tree, but from what I've heard X-Box can produce better graphics, but there are far fewer games available. The games are generally more directed at "older" (20s, 30s) gamers. PS2 pretty much owns the market, so far more games are available for PS2 than any other console.

There are two pseudo-consoles coming out that basically let you play PC games on your TV on a computer that looks like a console. I don't know if this is a good idea because most PC games are simply not designed for low resolution (I'm sure a lot of text would come out illegible). I can't remember the brand names nor company names, but the early buzz is "stay away" and the products aren't out yet. :)

They ported Morrowind to a console? Good. I can't stand the combat system used in the Daggerfall series, but that combat system would be much better suited to console play.

It would be a toss between GC and PS2.

PS2 has scads more games..and some of them are quite good. I do not like the feel of the controller though.

Gamecube has..well, MARIO!!! To me, the controller is much more comfy. Plus, the Wavebird is very nice. It is cheaper, but does not have a large selection of games.

I would take a look at what games you like to play, and see what console has the most to offer.

I'd also have to say a toss up between GC and PS2

GC has alot of good 4 player games and fun nintendo stuff
PS2 has alot of games... some are good, but theres a hell of alot of them

    wavebird is very nice

    X-box:

    Best graphics
Internal Hardrive (I wish all 3 consoles had this)
    IMO Weak Lineup of games
    plays DvDs

    PS2:

    Plays DvDs
Prolly has the strongest Lineup of games of the 3
    Gran turismo ;)

    Gamecube:

Best 4 player games (super smash bros: melee > you)
    compact size
    cool little mini disks ;)
has the best console exclusive games
As ash mentioned Wavebirds are sweet

Overall all 3 have +'s and -'s...I have a gamecube and I love it. But its all about what you want out of the system.

you can download some nice stuff for xbox off bit torrent and other places on the internet, you can basically mod it all like a pc if u look in the right places :D (There is even an xbox distro of linux iirc) cos its jus a stripped down w2k os.
But if u wana use it for games rather than general stuff your pc can do then i reccommend ps2

I'm leaning more towards Xbox for these reasons:

Better graphics (the graphics of ps2 are a little too choppy)
Xbox and ps2 tend to have the more involved games (i dont want to say mature, but nintendo does lean a bit more towards mario and such)
    Halo!!!!11
Xbox live is the best for online gaming on a consol i hear.

I'm going to be using a TV thats about 25 inches, since its the only TV that I have room for. Is this big enough to enjoy a consol, or should I shell out some extra for a larger one?

25 inches is good enough imo, maybe buy a bigger one later on if you want. And yeah I would agree on xbox, ps2 does have alot of games, but they seem like 90% of them are games with no replay value, but xbox has quite a few games you can play again and again.

Skies of Arcadia was remade for GC and its ****in awesome
    Tales is also coming along

and if you got GB player you could play GBA rpgs on your GC

but ps2 has a wider rpg selection, I'm just saying you could live with GC

I don't know why people think mario/zelda etc games aren't involving and that they are childish.Mario/Zelda games are some of the most involving, interesting games ever made.My favourite game of all time is probably a tossup between Super Mario Brothers 3 or Legend of Zelda:A Link to the past.
I have all 3 systems.Xbox is just a dvd player now.Playstation 2,i take out sometimes for tekken tag and tekken 4.System I play the most is gamecube.

Xbox has an already stellar lineup and is going to have a great 2004.

Gamecube has an extremely solid Nintendo lineup. If you like their kind of games, such as Metroid Prime, Zelda: Wind Waker, Mario Sunshine, Mario Party, F Zero, Mario Kart and the like, then go with Gamecube.

Playstation has the great console RPGs, and the biggest (not necessarily the best) lineup of games.

All 3 have developed into very comparable systems. Xbox is my current favorite. I have all 3, but the Xbox has an outstanding lineup of games, and it is going to get much better this year. Panzer Dragoon Orta, Links 2004, Project Gotham Racing 2 (best racing game I have ever played), ToeJam and Earl III, Shenmue II, Halo, Knights of the Old Republic, Amped 2, Quantum Redshift, Crimson Skies, Top Spin, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Morrowind, Counterstrike, Rainbow Six 3, and that is just off the top of my head of what has come out. What is coming out this year (hopefully) includes Halo2, Psychonauts, Fable, BC, Conker: Live and Uncut, Sudeki, and many more I cant think of right now.

Just my opinion. Too many people discount Xbox for weird reasons that just dont make sense. All three are great selections.
