Which came first? War or technology?

Philosophy time!

Which came first - war or technology?

I believe war came first. Two apes fighting over either a chunk of food or some fine ape booty. War.

Then one of them picked up a jawbone and bashed the brains out of the other. Technology.

It could be argued that there was no way to have war before technology. Before the jawbone was used it was not war, it was bickering. Yet there have been large groups of people battling other large groups of people and not a weapon to be found. Turf wars between punk gangs - before they became sophisticated and started shooting each other.

So what say you?

You call THAT sophisticated? "Sophisticated wars are fought with words." :D

War came first. Chimpanzees and Lemurs have been observed, even filmed, quite a few times now, going on unarmed war parties in territorial disputes.

War, anger is a basic animal instinct, and from anger come violence, if any form of violence is considered war, then war had to have come first.

Yes, you are correct. It is frighteningly captivating to watch a gang of chimps stalk a colony of monkeys, then rush them, scaring them to the top of the trees, where they are summarily tossed to their deaths. Of course, then the chimps eat them, which is just sick. Cool, but sick.

Technology obviously. I have no proof, or even unclear evidence of this, I just wanted to be the first to say it.

And war technology research is why has given us so much of the technology that we use today.

Computers, Microwave Ovens, etc. All from Defense Research.

I think your girlfriend needs to take away that remote and change the channel away from the animal channel.

I vote war first. I'm basing my vote on an analogy with any invention. The needs usually comes first. Then come the machine (invention). Albeit some invent things first and find a use later, those normally end up in the encyclopedia of stupid inventions. Besides, booty call has precedence over the use of a jawbone.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Yes, war is very good for innovation.
That's because the costs are not really important.

I reckon war came first. Think about it. Lets make it two big armies going head to head in a all-out fist war. Then after a while both armies draw away and go to the drawing board, looking for easier ways to kill their enemies. Thus technology begins. Each army builds bigger and better things(weapons, armor, defensive stuff, etc.) to try and out-do the other. Exactly what happened in the Space Race.

Funny pic freemason... right on.

Anyway... today's politicians are panzies. I wouldn't call their coddling of each other even with diametricaly opposing viewpoints war, though yeah, wars start from political struggles often...

Thing is, the george washington types of the world aint around anymore... now politicians start wars, and go hiding in bunkers ordering us to kill for them.

---------

AS FAR AS THE TOPIC QUESTION GOES....

The answer is.... wars came first...

Two apes squabbling over food etc, aint warfare.

A pack of apes fighting aint warfare either.

Warfare is... mass numbers... I can't pinpoint it but the reason wars came first... is cuz of ANTS.

Ants kick but in the little world.

They stick together. Lay down their lives for each other, and by the tens of thousands will scout out to another ant hill, to decimate the opposition.

Cool footage of scout ants and sentries etc.

And they've been around for millions of years (some types).

This is what happens when you come home and you're bored.

You talk about ants in diablo 2 forums.

I say War. Its really disturbing watching chimpanzees fight and kill each other. I saw in a documentary where a group of chimps ambushed a male chimp and killed it. They beat it on its chest so bad that the bones were showing, they ripped off its testacles and worse of all they held him down.

To be out of my supposed warmongering character here on the OTF, I'd agree but have no reasonable way to establish it.

I don't believe Smeg's 1-on-1 example qualifies as war, though the gang of chimps would; I'd like to think that a chimp stuck a straw into the anthill or used a nicely shaped rock to take down a pig before he got together with his pals and bum-rushed the neighboring monkey group.

technology caused war... or advancements in life.

take Civilization 2 for example... well actually, it started as a land battle... with cats and their territories.. so war first, than technology.
Except technology was pretty closely tied in there too... once people saw that land and numbers didn't matter, it was all about tech.

The chicken or the egg?

It's a cyclic relationship, akin to the chicken and the egg mystery. If we start with war: war spawns new technology which creates a power imbalance that is often addressed by war which creates new technology...and the cycle continues. If we start with technology: new technology creates a power imbalance which is often addressed by war which spawns more technology which creates more war...and the cycle continues.
