Where to begin?

Ok, I'm just starting to play diablo 2 again. It's been so long since I've played and I wanted to start playing online. I have expansion and I've been lurking around the forums trying to make myself a little bit more informed on how things work. However, it all seems a bit overwhelming.

I guess my question is should I play on open bnet or should I do your SPF thing. I was reading through the guides and stickies in the SPF forum and I'm not sure which mods I actually need.

So if anyone could offer some advice I'd be eternally grateful.

Depends

If you want to play legitly, join the SPF (and read the stickies, you don't need any mods)

If you want access to lots of "legit" HRs and "legit" high end items, play ladder/non-ladder

Open Bnet should be avoided like a fanatically enhanced cursed frenzytaur

Whatever you do, you have to start in the Blood Moor :D

SPF and Open Bnet are somewhat related. More info on that in the SPF itself. Watch the stickies there. You can also play on Closed Bnet, which is where all the trading in the respecitve Realms are for.

fixed that for you

The SPF is a place for people to play legitly with SP characters both offline and over TCP/IP/Hamachi

Open Bnet uses SP characters, but has every hack under the sun on it apparently; even touching Open bnet makes you unable to trade/MP within the SP(T)F

Ok one last question I hope.

I'm still a little fuzzy on what exactly a ladder character is.
