to Bautch: yes, the white items people speak of ARE the statless trash you speak of
haha. armors have varying defenses, along with shields, and some that are just plain ol' white items can be quite useful. find a white sacred rondache with 43 all resists? socket that bad boy and make yourself a spirit! (pally shields are the only shields that can be white and have all resistances and enhanced damage/attack rating mods).
Also, there's a cube recipe for socketing armors, shields, weapons and helms, but each one is a little different. www.battle.net/diablo2exp snoop around on here under the item and horadric cube tabs.
the pit is in act 1 in the area before the outer cloister (Tamohae Highlands or whatever) and it's a cave much like the den of evil. it's got the highest area level you can achieve in diablo 2, thus greater drop chances... it's kinda complex but don't worry about it.
