When nova was the main PvP attack

Hi, I'm not so new to the diablo 2 XP but i'm still new in all the new stuff thats keeps going here on the bnet.
I've played some time now and have gotten som descent chars over the 3 weeks.
Now I gotten to the point to get a hammardin but can't figure out how to specc and why I should specc that way.
And the hardest part of all is to get that expensive gear ( The rune word gear)
    So my questions are following.
    1. How should i specc to get the most out of my hammardin in PvE? A clean answear would be nice since I don't sometimes clearly understand what they are trying to say.
    2. What gear should I first try to get, and then switch to?

    Thanks in before hand.

P.S I played when Nova was the über PvP attack on the bnet. D.S :prop:

you dont really need the expensive gear to make a hdin work.

    try something like this:
    - wizard spike
    - pala-spirit with + res
    - shako
    - magefists
    - fcr ring
    - vipermagi
    - +3 combat skills/+2 pala skills amu with some nice adds
    - some nice boots (waterwalk or silkweaves)

and an act 2 (holy freeze) merc with insight, one of the usual leech helmets (tals or gaze) and an armor with resists

this should get you to the 125 fcr breakpoint with more or less maxed resists in hell (you have still the armor and helm socket open) and enough mana with insight.

after that, you can reach out for the enigma, hoto, arach, whatever setup, that you can read about in every other pala-forum thread.

edit: im not sure what you meant with your first question. but i guess you are aming at skills and stats. should look like this:

str: enough for gear (60 or so)
dex: enough for max block with holy shield (120 or so)
    nrg: none
    vit: rest

    skills:
blessed hammer and both synergies maxed
concentration maxed as your main aura
    rest in holy shield

there is a guide for optimized damage during leveling somewhere in these forums. you might try to find it (in the paladin stickies probably).

i would put the rest of the skill points into resist lightning instead of holy shield

Here's a guide for the maximum damage approach for a hammerdin. It tells you where to put skill points at each lvl. I think that's the one carnivore was talking about.

I don't clearly understand the meaning of "pala-spirit with + res".
What does it differs from all the other spirit shields?
I've gotten the rune last i've read this and wonder if there is someone out there who is willing to give a good price for a descent shield with the additonal sockets.

Re: When nova was the main PvP attack

Spirit rune word in a paladin only shield.
and paladin only shields always have either + all resistances (up to 45) or + enhanced damage/ attack rating. +all resistances are much more usful than enhanced damage.
another thing: pala shields have a lower strength requirement then normal 4 open socket shields (monarchs are the lightest of those with 156 str req) and better block (if im not mistaken).

for prices and trtades you should consult the trade forum. the items i suggested are all fairly cheap, with the exception of the fcr-ring and the ammu, that can get expensive depending on the other mods on them, but can also be traded for a couple of perfect gems if you focus on the most important stats only.
