White color item... I always keep 10%+ EDef. Mage Plate to make an Enigma / Trade!
Also, Barbarian Helms / Druid Pelts / Necromancer Shrunken Heads / Paladin Shields /
Assassin Katars / 10%+ EDef. Diadem / 10%+ EDef. Bone Visage /

White items - and gray for that fact - are usefull to collect because in some occasions, they can sell for more then the runeword one might put into. Think about ethereal Vortex shield with 45 resistance - certainly those that are ebugged and have 4 sockets. Or 4 socket superior gmb with +3 to bow and crossbow skills.

P.S. wasn't there a guide about what white/gray/magic items to pick up - and if there isn't, why doesn't someone make one?

so once you find a 'white' or 'grey' are they often then socketed for runewords?

and can you upgrade items with open sockets?

Yep.

As the others said, certain combinations of:

1. item base-type (Dusk Shroud, Thresher, etc.)
2. number of sockets
3. ethereal or non-ethereal-ness
4. "superior" and/or inherent auto-mods (+resists on paladin shields, +skills on assasin claws, +defense% on ethereal armors, etc)

... can be quite rare, as well as highly desired for a certain runeword.

Re: What's the story with: picking up 'whites' ?

its a shame, because the superior ethereal dusk is actually useless. This is beacuse you cannot bug that armor, which prevents any useful utility for that item.

Etheral non superior elite armors are for eth bugging (you cannot bug a superior item as it requires the cube recipe)

White superior items such as elite armors are useful for some runwords such as CoH and Bramble, Fortitude (especially archon plate which has the best defese vs str req ratio) and dusk (which has the lowest str req and yet decent defense)

useful items you may want to pick up:

white and gray (socketed) superior elite armors and superior mageplates (2 = smoke, 3 = enigma, 4 = CoH)
socketed crystal swords, phaseblades (3= cresent moon, 4= spirit, 5 = grief)
Eth elite armors, especially with defense over 750 (can ebug to 1100+ defense armors)
beserker axes (5 sockets especailly), eth and non eth. (grief)
Eth balrog blades (oath runeword)
Eth poleaxes - Colossus volge for merc, thresher, great poleaxe, cryptic axe etc (4= spirit, inifinty, 5= obediecne, doom etc)
White pala shields (esp elite ones) - (3 = dream, sanctuary etc, 4= spirit), can get 40+ resist all for more worth. A white [email protected] sacred targe sells for 8+ ists on europe.

also armors can be sold for gold (elite ones almost always 35k on hell)

Re: What's the story with: picking up 'whites' ?

thanks guface!

two more questions.
if i use larzuk to socket this eth superior dusk shroud, is there a definite number of sockets he will give me? or can it range from lets say 2-4?
also, can anyone explain eth bugging?

thanks.

Re: What's the story with: picking up 'whites' ?

Larzuk always gives the maximum # of sockets for an item based on its item level (which is determined by the monster level of the monster that dropped it - Hell Baal is level99, so he always drops items with ilvl99, Diablo= 94, so his items are 94, etc.).

eth bugging - when you use the cube recipe to socket an ethereal armor, the defense bonus (for being ethereal) gets applied a 2nd time.

you're forgetting 4 sock ebugged (or unsocket bugable) vortex sheilds for making exile. Sold one the other day with just 35 and not jet socketed for 2 hr.

good point. Eth vortexes and elite pala shields can fetch a pretty penny for exiles.

My list was by no means exhaustive but its a good indicator of where to begin. Remember that people will need whites and grays for socketing runewords. If you have something that cannot be made into anything useful, its useless.

As a rule, 3 socket decent armors (archon, dusk, mp) are very expensive these days as HR prices fall and enis become more common.
