What's the big fascination with FFVII?

Why do people think that this is the best of the series? Just because of Sephiroth and his big sword? Cloud and his big sword? Vicent, or Tifa's huge tracks of land :D

Honestly the story is good, but not that great. I think FFVI and FFX had a much more involved and better story. Also there are more and cooler characters in 6 like Shadow, Cyan, Setzer.

The materia system was ok, but too much customization leaves less defined characters. I think FFX got it right with the sphere grid. No real experience and smaller gradual changes.

And to those people who would say because of Tifa's breasts, Lulu's are better.

I love it in the same way I love The Legend of Zelda Ocaraina of time. First shot at full 3d, love the soundtrack, the storyline, and I think it was the most fun to play. Sephiroth does make being pure evil look cool though.

    and this.

It is I more than FFVI, which rocked. So FFVII should rock precisely I more.

    P.S. Kefka > Sephiroth.

    End.

I really liked the game all around except 2 places.

When Cloud tells the story about his past when you reach Kalm and when you fall into the lifestream.

    Everything else is fun.

Its the characters. All the characters in the game are badasses, well except Cait Sith but lets not count him. Unlike the other games where you only have one or two badass completely badass characters. Well and because Cloud and Sephiroth had such big swords

Then there is the fact that Aries died, that character was so damn annoying, it was the coolest thing ever when Sephiroth ruined her ****.

As was mentioned before it was a huge graphical breakthrough in the series, ie. full 3d. The summon spells were also jaw-dropping when you saw them the first time (eg. ifrit/ramuh). The music was damn good, the cutscenes were damn good and the story was exciting as well. No FF game will ever surpass it.

Yeah the graphics and what not were amazing for its time, I can't really explain it but it has really good replay value compared to the other FF's, I mean I could play through all of them again but I enjoyed playing through FF7 a number of times, and the side quests were a lot of fun.

I think the story line was more indepth than anything that's come since. Also, I love it for the characterization. Sephiroth is the best villain I've found in any RPG(sympthetic, diablolical, and just plain cool).

The biggest difference for me is the materia system, though. If you're talking about customization allowing for less differentiated characters, I would call FFVII better than most other titles in that respect. Think about FFX. after 80 hours I had 5 characters with complete sphere grids. However, because of the time limit in FFVII, you can only do so much high level customization. It's not like you can get the 64x knights of the round combo going on two different players. In fact, I spent a large portion of the game just getting the one combination. Furthermore, the weapons only allow for so much customization, as they can only carry so many skills/upgrades. Whereas in FFX, anyone could carry any skill at any time, as long as it was highlighted, FFVII made you choose which characters were going ot have which skills.

I also loved the map. There's something fascinating about exploring for the first time. I loved it. GIve me FFVII any day.

I really liked the whole mercenary idea...it was intriquing. But I hated the charges or whatever, and how you had to drain spells.

I never got a chance to Play FFVII since I started RPGs pretty late (around beginning of PS2) so I only got to Play FFIX and FFX. I thought FFX was extraordinary and if millions of people say that FFVII is the king of Final Fantasies, I just might take their word for it.

    I havent played FFVII :(.

    I too started rpgs late-FFVIII was the first,then I played IX,X).
hey,if there is a remake,I'll probably get it,after all these years the psone graphics might look dull. But I have heard almost everywhere that its the undisputed grand-daddy of all rpgs.

*Kills Jigga with an icepick to the face*

    8 was crap. Nuff said.

My reasoning to why 7 was so popular? It was most people's first experience with the FF franchise since it was a signature title on the Playstation.
I thought it was a great game, but 6 was far superior. I also thought X was overated, but eh.

Um. No. Most people acknowledge FF 6 and Chrono Trigger is being some of the greatest, if not the greatest, RPGS of all time.

FF VII sucks, I hate it, always have, it was ugly even then and the story was boring

ugliness doesn't much matter to me, but it seems to matter to some people who liked the game for it's looks and I just don't see it, it was ooglay

I lent it to someone and never asked for it back
