What's the best way to learn how to duel?

the best way to me by far is to duel the SAME class/build as you, someone who is better by far, this way you can ask them how they win and what you can do to improve. they will know your char inside out and be able to understand what you are doing wrong.

I'm a decent WW/Trap all thanks to HappyAssassin and Bune's tips, they are the gg-est sins ever ;] PS. Ollie stop playing barbs you know they arent as cool.

@Rising:

Dueling against the same build as you is a great way to improve, but it doesn't help when dueling vastly different characters. Example could be sin v sin duels, although very helpful for duels versus casters they will give some very minimal improvements in your sin v smiter or hdin dueling.

BTW, hes right, ditch the bvc ollie.

I know hanson, I need some practice against bone necros, as you so aptly showed -.- If only my friends would let me practice against their bone necromancers! *hint hint* *wink wink* *nudge nudge*

Best way to learn how to duel is duel people who are slightly better than you. Then when you beat them find someone better. Etc, etc. Eventually you'll hit the top tier, where there aren't so much better opponents as good days and bad days. At that point the goal is consistancy, if you can execute your ideal duel over and over then you are really good. Personally, I'm not there yet at all, I sometimes have a bad day and lose to people I normally beat, and I sometimes beat opponents who would 5-1 or 5-0 me on another day.

I recommend joining a dueling clan or finding a group of people who regularly duel. Unfortunately, private dueling is almost completely gone, and crap pub dueling rules the realms. Pubs might be a good way, but you will hear alot of retarded smack talk, and a lot of dumb hacks (TMC, TPPK, Flash Hack etc...), which will really take the fun out of it. I recommend to just leave at that point, and find another dueling game. Find people on these forums who duel, and ask for tips, duel friends, friends of friends, friends of friends of friends, join a dueling tourney, a ladder, anything. The best way is to just duel, you can only be told so much, you just have to go out there and get raped, and eventually, you'll rape back.

Its quite easy:

Join a private dueling clan. Duel the people better then you. Keep dueling them. Helping eachother get better is by far the fastest method.

Using underdog classes against obviously overpowered build has tendency's to get you skill really.. really.. fast.

I remember the first time I dueled.

Brought my purely PvM FO/TS sorc into a pub game thinking "ah cant be too hard my sorc can rock everything else in the game"... boy was I WRONG! lol.

Yeah best way imo, grab your character and throw him into a game full of strong duelers and keep going at 'er until you eventually come across some level of skill.

Good luckk...

I really advise against learning to duel in pubs, you'll get nked constantly and you'll run into all kinds of things you don't find in "duels." Most pubs have at least one farcaster, town snipe amazon or bm player. Since you will certainly be very weak in the beginning (unless you're a pro mfer who is just now deciding to duel), really good pkers generally won't consider you worth their time. I see lots of MF sorcs get nked by normally GM players because its like stepping on an ant. They don't really think about it. So you'll have to go around pubs, but once you find someone to practice against ask them nicely to make new game where you won't be jumped/nked/cursed while you practice.

agreed.

pubs will really give you bad habits. you'll be able to get away with stuff that won't work vs good duelers, and you'll lose your form when you have to deal with the sheer number of people coming after you.

i'd really recommend dueling with a good friend of yours where you don't care about winning/losing, and try out different strategies. the best way to learn is to find someone that knows how to play the character and can guide you from the receiving end.

Thanks for the tips, they're really appreciated. I guess I'll get my real life friend on one of my characters that is a bit higher than my hammerdin and practice dueling him until I get used to dueling with him.
whats your realm by the way?If you play east nl i can duel you with my bvc
