What's so great about smite?

This is gonna sound like a stupid question, but I feel like this is something taken for granted. EVERYBODY knows that smite is really useful, right?

Well.. what's so great about it? Is it simply that it is an efficient way to apply crushing blow to bosses (because it always hits)?

If so, then why put more than 1 point in it?

i don't get it...

Smite almost always connects(95% chance, but it never seems not to), it is a very efficient way to apply crushing blow, it hits one target(in trist it allows you to focus on the big 3 rather than all the minions like with zeal), it can do massive dmg with grief, the difference between 1 point in smite and 20 points in smite actually isn't that great, but for a dedicated smiter(only using smite for pvp/trist) all of the extra dmg helps.
