What's better for Act II Merc

    What's better for Act II Merc

    I found these items:

    Steel Pillar (102-118) To (551-640)

    25% Chance of Crushing Blow
    -20% Target Defense
    +25% Increased Attack Speed

    I still think it's Steel Pillar, but I want to know your opinions. I've got Steel Pillar on my Act II merc and the sonovagun kills faster than I do in Hell. I also have that unique balrog spear(http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/elite/ujavelins.shtml). I found them all doing Act I pits. It IS a good place. It dropped a unique shako as well. Anyways, which one?

    If anyone wants to trade, please pm me. Runes are what I'm looking for, but I'm not turning down any good trades. (non-ladder). US West.

    I'd say the Bonehew. It's much faster than Steel Pillar and has 2x sockets for Shaels or Amns. Bonehew will be much better for survivability, and they probably do comparable damage when you factor in the crushing blow from Steel Pillar. For Boss fights I'd consider the Steel Pillar because of its crushing blow.

    Ooo, thanks, yeah my merc is one level short of using it. Good stuff. Now if only that death's web will drop in Act I.

    If you're a melee fighter, Reaper's Toll is one of the best options (because of Decrepify).
    If you're a sorceress, Infinity is the best (but very expensive).
    If you're a summon necro or whatever else using a specific curse on monsters (like amplify damage for a summon necro), Bonehew is a nice option, because Reaper's would overwrite your specific curse. But in the case of a summon necro, I personnally prefer a +4 Arioc's Needle, so the Might aura of my mercenary is stronger (and so are my skeletons :p).
    If you're a hammerdin, Insight is very nice for the mana regeneration.

    So you see, there's no definitive answer to your question, it all depends on your build and your skills.

    I agree with Chimaira. As you are looking for Death's Web, I guess it's about a poison/bone necro, else Reaper's Toll would be the better choice. A skelemancer's merc would be better off with an upped Kelpie Snare (which might be better versus bosses than Steel Pillar in any case BTW).

    BTW, Death's Web is a TC 87 item, so most of the act 1 monsters can't drop it. The only act 1 places where it can drop are the Mausoleum, the Crypt (to a lesser extent) and the Pits. Apart from the "out of sync" areas, TC 87 items start to drop in the flayer jungle (bosses only). In addition, Death's Web is an item with its drop chances being reduced to 1/3 because unearthed wands can have staffmods. That makes it one of the most rare unique weapons in the game. Luckily its qlvl is quite low (74), so all monsters who can drop from TC 87 can drop that wand as well.

    He wasn't talking about the best mercenary weapon...merely whether he should choose Bonehew or Steel Pillar.

    For me the best weapon for a high level merc (>85 level) is:

    Obedience (Polearms only)
    Hel + Ko + Thul + Eth + Fal

    30% Chance To Cast Level 21 Enchant When You Kill An Enemy
    40% Faster Hit Recovery
    +370% Enhanced Damage
    -25% Target Defense
    Adds 3-14 Cold Damage
    -25% To Enemy Fire Resistance
    40% Chance of Crushing Blow
    +200-300 Defense (varies)
    +10 To Strength
    +10 To Dexterity
    All Resistances +20-30 (varies)
    Requirements -20%

    You need to find a Eth Cryptic Axe or Eth Tresher and the damage will be: 230 -1057 (CA) or 84 - 991 (Tresher). Bellow level 85 my merc is using an upgraded Eth Hone Sundan with Amn + Shael + 15% IAS / 32% Ed jewel with a total of stats:

    Hone Sundan (Ghost Spear)
    Two-Hand Damage: 106 - 784
    Required Level: 62
    Required Strength: 122
    Required Dexterity: 163
    Base Weapon Speed: [0]

    221% Enhanced Damage
    20% Increased attack speed
    7% life stolen per hit
    Adds 20-40 Damage
    45% Chance of Crushing Blow
    Repairs 1 Durability In 10 Seconds

    All you need to find is a Eth version of these waepons, Eth CA and tresher are about ~pul these days on trade forum. So for of total of a ~UM rune you will have a much better weapon then those two. I have a eth tresher and if you are playing on Europe could sell it to you for a Pul rune :D Eth Hone Sundan is much higher in cost.

    I have read more places than just on these forums that PMH doesn't work for a merc. I have never seen conclusive evidence either, but that's what I've read.

    This is not a trade forum, please use one of the trade forums.

    I.E. East Standard, West Standard, or Eurpoe, Hardcore, or SP.

    Edit : since there is discussion about what is better for an act 2 merc, I will leave this open.

    bonehew! its also kinda fun to see the random bonespears comming out too! and those spears make that awesome sound as they slam thru stacks of minions as it pierces each one :thumbsup:

    Haha, thanks for the replies guys. I thinkI'm goingto go with Bonehew. Damn, I didn't know this thread was going to go for so long. Steel Pillar is nice, but if Bonehew is faster then it's what I'm going to go with. I'll get back to you on if pmh works or not. I have to stop using poison. Sorry for the plug. I upped the damage with a +30% increaase damage jewel I found and a flawless skull. I don't got runes!

    I think I like Bonehew best, but I have so many freaking characters that I didn't have a Bonehew for everyone. :) Most of my mercs use Bonehew but some use Steel Pillar, some use Ariocs Needle, one uses a Reapers Toll, and one even uses a Demon's Arch. I have even played around with Viperfork on them too. The poison explosion is cool but doesn't really do much. ;)
