Act2 Nightmare Defencive FTW... You get holy freeze, which slows all monsters around you/him and allows you to get in more attacks before they get to you. For a common setup: Eth Fort, Eth CV Insight, Eth Andy's Helm, or for the poorer: Duriels Shell(Eth if you can), Any Insight, and Gaze maybe?

I know a lot of pur Blizzard sorcs feel they have enough freezing going on already so they look to one of the other merc types.

Might (Act 2 normal/hell) mercs will kill the cold immunes a little faster for you. This can be useful as there's a fair number of cold immunes in the game.

Insight can be fun for fast rushes and non stop tele !

More practical will be a might merc armed with a big arse pokey stick that does huge damage. Think Obedience, eth Reaper's toll etc.

Treachery for loads of IAS. Vamp gaze, Tal's mask or Andy's for leech and some resist.
Duriel's shell, Duress, Shaftstop and others do well too, as does the Orphan set helm.

I prefer a Prayer merc for Insight, over ANY other kind. Not having to use healing potions unless in emergencies is GREAT. From near-dead to full health in less than a minute (well, roughly).

My mf blizz sorc merc uses eth fort sacred armor eth insight cv and andy mask,

Prayer is kinda useless imo..... as it takes to long to heal you, might is ok but ide definatly use defiance. It adds 15k or more def to my merc and if you doing meph he will never be hit. Thats my advise to keep him from dying, also insight is also great for teleing if you dont have enough mana.

What are your tactics? When you see his health diminishing, do you teleport him to a safer location? He should be pretty durable if you manage him right and feed him a potion or two from time to time. If he's taking on a tough opponent like Lister, you can use Telekinesis for its knockback effect, keeping the monster off balance and against a wall.
