Whatever happened to Orb/FWall?

I mean, sure they're dated, and they used to be all the rage back pre-1.10, but why choose say, Meteorb over Orb/Firewall? It seems like Firewall still gets good damage in 1.10, and you can max Orb/Cold Mastery/Firewall/Fire Mastery by level mid-70's-ish, leaving a whole other 20+ skills for other crap.

I would have to say, it is all the walls fault. If you look at the dmg it is decent, but know that the creature must spend a little time in it to have the effect. The thing with meteor in 1.10 is that it has a huge impact dmg than still burns decently, so if used resonably well, it will be way more effective because of the huge punch at the start. FW just can't keep up because it requires way to much crowd control to make it work well.

meteor gets synergies and firewall don't. meteor is somewhat easier to use. other than that, go ahead and make one.

I like the fact that if a monsters IS standing still, FW takes effects immediately and you just watch their life bar go down.

make sure you learn about synergies because they are really important

Haha, another valid point, you must admit though. For a spell without synergies its dmg is still somewhat viable, though hard to use well.

Seems that Orb/Firewall got replaced by Blizzard/Firewall. The damage of Firewall is still good and wiht a few points or all points in Fire Mastery it simply does not need a synergy. Combine this with 20 Blizzard/20 Glacial Spike and the rest of the points into Cold Mastery and you can freeze monster or slow them, while they walk through your Firewall.

Also playing Firewall with a Merc is a good idea, since you can place those FWs infront of him. Firewall is actually alot about placing it right. Also multiple Firewalls stack in damage.

I would not so easily disregard this kind of build, just because of the lack of synergies. Firewall is still alot like Frozen Orb as both dont need synergies to be effective.

There is a Blizzwall guide in the Sorceress Guide Library, stickied above.

I recently used Firewall in my early lvling stages for a new build and had a Leafstaff to help it along damage wise. I used Firewall form lvl18 on til 24 when Blizzard popped up and it was amazing to use for that time. With more damage this can be even more effective

Thanks for the replies, I was just kinda curious. For the purposes of meph runs however, it does seem like a pretty good option...iono. I guess I'll just stick to my pure blizzard build for that

Meteor does way more dam than it used to in pre 1.10.
Provided that you have a strong merc, meteor will be more effective than wall.
Brings down bosses faster, and longer duration(I think).

The whole placing it properly and the monsters have to stand in it is what turned me off to it. With meteor and fireballs, i'm a happy sorc... as cold immune monsters rush me... I pelt them with fireballs and they are usually dead before they can reach me... I couldn't do that with a firewall. And meteors... well, their just a bonus that comes with fireballs... and a usefull bonus too.... "Booom"... fire everywhere and it continues to burn them just like a firewall would.
