What would you die for?

Re: What would you die for?

speaking of kids:

there's no "benjamin buttons". we are born as babies. our entire body grows and develops with time.

except....one part of the body....

question 1: anyone wanna take a guess?

*Spoiler 'ed answer below*

answer 1: the eyes

you are born with a babies body but fully grown adult eyes.

question 2: anyone know why (or at least the prevalent theory) ??

*Spoiler 'ed answer below*

the prevalent theory is that the adult eyes make u sexy and attractive/adorable. this makes it much harder for an adult male (many male animals will try to or succeed in eating the infants if the female animal doesn't chase off the male) to be able to kill-eat a baby. also, you're more inclined to help out that adorable sexy baby with those adult eyes. attractive people get better service and treatment than ugly people.

Depends. I'd assess the situation on its individual merits. The other factor is how much I feel I have left to do before dying at that point in time.

Isn't the world record for staying awake about 11 days or so?

Even then the record holders will by then have spent countless hours in micro sleep. Sleep deprivation is fatal at around two to two and half weeks.
Maybe for normal, healthy people. Michael Corke didn't sleep for six months in a row until he died of it. Others with the same disease (fatal familial insomnia) might have gone without sleep for even longer.

Don't forget Temperature needs, if energy is not keeping you warmer than the background Temperature of the universe you would freeze damn quick, on the other hand too much and you fry.

I would die if it meant saving my girlfriend, mother, brother, or 3 best friends.
I wouldn't die for my country, my city, or the whole world, for that matter (provided that would exclude the ones mentioned in the first line).

It's that simple to me.

Re: What would you die for?

The possibility of microsleep, 'sleeping' for times as little as the time it takes to blink often without the microsleeper even realising, makes it difficult to examine the effects of sleep deprivation. Scientific studies are ethically questionable as sleep deprivation is basically torture, there has been at least one example though. An american student staying awake around 10 days as I recall. In a couple of unique cases people have been claimed to have gone years without any noticable sleep, others to have spent years on as little as 3/24 hours of sleep via paraphasic sleep.

Sleep in general does deserve more attention than it receives though, I'd put it alongside exercise and diet as a key component of a healthy lifestyle. There are numerous few tricks to improving your sleep quality, and the quantity and quality of time spent awake as a result, many of them quite easy and simple.

Personally I can often skip a night without obvious ill effects. Last year I was briefly in the habit of sleeping 2 nights out of 3 for a few weeks, I still go without occasionally, though only for good reason. I skipped Sunday night (due to spending 00.00-06.00 outside at a train station where it was cold, snowing in fact) and feelings of tiredness didn't make themselves noticable until about 8pm Monday. I don't appear to have accumulated any significent sleep debt, sleeping from 11.30-7.50 and spending Tuesday perfectly normally.

Apart from my kids, I wouldnt give my life for anybody. I rate myself as better than everybody and only my kids can be better than me.
I'll humor you. Better in what sense?

Re: What would you die for?

after 3 full days (day and night=72 hrs) u WILL SLEEP even if it means it kills u (like driving a car or flying a jet) or if you're in a hot air balloon and suddenly wake up after 1 hr of sleep after going 72 hrs of no sleep and being so sleepy, u don't even realize it as u NEARLY climb out of the hot air balloon and fall to your death (true story of someone, not me!! no way would i ever go in a hot air balloon!!! lol).

i'm not gonna provide much info as it's a bit gross...so here it is:

going at least 24 hrs no sleep, completely ruins your digestive system and u don't properly digest...causing really bad "toilet excursions" and really foul "bloating"...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
microsleep:

u start blinking your eyes and have to make an effort to keep them open.

what people don't realize, is that despite it seeming like u are awake and seeing stuff, u actually are NOT. u ARE sleeping, but it's very deceptive since u think that u are still seeing stuff and still awake, but u ARE actually fully asleep. microsleep is pretty much the same thing as sleepwalking...and if your driving....this often results in accidents and death.

BEWARE of tired or the worst case micro-sleep'ing truckers...

I'd die for a Klondike Bar.

I define love as the point of emotional connection which leads to the happiness of another being essential to one's own well being.
No, that's how Robert Heinlein defines love.

love is simply what is important to u (and MORE important than u yourself) on an emotional level :D

Re: What would you die for?

To the OP:

Don't worry about it. Are people really so precous in the first place? When you have billions of something, it is no longer valuable. Since there are billions of people, any notion of a person being important or special is just one of those lies we are told throughout life.

Take a cool dude from your classroom for instance: when he dies, there will be 100 more cool dudes to replace him. They will wear his tattoos, don his bad boy clothes, and they will have his same attitude and behaviors. All this was done to stand out, to be different...yet there are millions of cool dudes. None of them are unique, none stand out after all.

And Hegemonkhan...um...why are you so scatterbrain? I see you even edited your first post, yet you left in a whole bunch of irrelevant topics! You need to flex a strong editorial hand over your work. In layman's terms: For God sakes man, restrain yourself. Can you please stick to the topic at hand? Also, your prose is full of contradictions. It's no good if you take a side and then jump the fence in the next paragraph. Then, you bring in Hitler to each and every discussion it seems. People bring up a profession, idea, or situation or w/e and you utilize the most extreme case of genocide in Earth history to support a string of unrelated ideas. Topic shifting within your own work is never good.

No offense, some one had to bring it up.

In pretty much everything and in all aspects of life. My kids are the only ones that have the potensial to be better than me. Thats why they are the only ones on my list.
