If the armor is not superior and 600 is the base defense, simply multiply it by 3.

If the armor is superior, figure out the base defense by dividing the final defense by 1.xx, where xx is the superior number (ie. 8% superior: divide by 1.08). This is the base defense. Now, multiply this base defense by 200% + xx%, where xx is the superior number (ie. 200% + 8% superior = 208%).

ex. 600 defense with 10% superior mod
    600/1.1 = 545 base defense
    545(3+.1)=1689 defense Fortitude

Evrae Altana is correct, although he forgot the +15 Defense attribute coming from the El in the runeword, giving another 15 defense after the defense is multiplied by the 200% (or 210% as in the example above) giving the armor a total defense of 1704.

    So:

If the armor has 600 def and is superior with 10% ed, the total defense would be 1704.

If the armor has 600 def and is not superior, the total defense would be 1815.

I always forget about that extra tidbit of defense when calculating defenses of Fortitudes. Thanks for the correction!

actually on that example the base would be 546 as when reversing round down steps you need to round up
    giving 1692+15 = 1707

It depends on what your defense already is, and what you want to do. Defense works on a diminishing returns scale, so the effect you get from going from 0 to 2000 defense is a lot more than you get going from, for example, 23,000 to 25,000.

In most circumstances, you'll have plenty of defense, and the vitality you'll gain from putting those str points into vitality would be a lot better. On the other hand, BvB barbs often need as much defense as they can get, so it's not always a bad idea for them.

A nice compromise is something along the lines of an Archon Plate, which is light, has low str requirements, and can still get ocer 500 defense.

High def armors are needed on zealots and BvB's imo, BvC can come by with an MP enigma.
