What qualifies a weapon as being "magical"?

I was reading up on runewords, and I read that they can not be put into magical items.

I am a fan of "Steel" and I have the runes and an appropriate weapon to craft them in. Before I potentially waste my runes though, I'd like to know what makes items magical.

Does an increased attack speed? Increased durability? Increased damage? I'm pretty sure additional elemental damage means an item is magical. What about items that grant bonuses to skills? I'd love to "Steel" a Scepter that grants some Aura bonuses for my Paladin.

Any blue-colored item is referred to as "magical," just like yellow-coloreds are "rare," greens are "set items," and golds are "unique." Oranges are "crafted," for completeness. Runewords cannot be made in any of those types of items, only grey-colored socketed items.

Items that are of superior quality, or are ethereal, or have +skills/aura bonuses like you say can still be made into runewords, just as long as they are grey-colored and not blue/yellow/gold/etc. If the item starts off as white and has +skills, etc, you can socket it and make a runeword out of it.

Edit: In case any of that is ambiguous, it's the name of the item I'm talking about regarding it's color.

Might add that "white" items can be turned into "grey" by using socketing recipe of the horadric cube or using the first quest from act 5.

Is the name of the item in white or gray? It's not magical.

Is the name of the item in blue, yellow, orange, green or golden? It's magical.


Some nonmagical items (Mostly superior) might have some blue modifiers like increased durability, damage, etc, but those do not make an item magical, even if the modifiers are in blue. What matters is the name of the item.
