What is the best way to...

1) pass items between characters?
I've now lost 8 runes and 2 quality uniques and a set item...with only 1 successful pass of some stupid gloves.

2) be sure that a runeword will work with an item...

can anyone explain why this didn't work??

1: it's called muling - the "best" way is to have a friend help you out. Another is to have two legit full copies of the game + 2 comps & self mule. The last is to open up a pass-worded game - stay in it to perm it (around 5 mins) drop an item then switch to other character (this can be risky)-

2: Rune words don't work in magic (blue) items - Only "grey" non-magical items

If you happen to be on US W / NL I can help you out muling - I know you don't know me or anything but I wouldn't steal from you... it's just a game after all. Plus the I wouldn't betray this community

I used to "perm" a private room to mule items between characters. You need to stay in the room for at least 5 minutes to "perm" it. I would usually time it to 6-7 minutes to be sure then without dropping any items yet i would relog and check the room still exists, then i would proceed with the transfer. I never had any issues with this method.

Just make sure you do not switch rooms/create rooms too quickly or you will end up with a temp ban. Don't rush it, wait 30 seconds between switching characters.

I've lost at least 12 hrs worth of equipment to bad transfers - I'm lucky it hasn't been more.

Really, the first thing to know is that there is no 100% Safe way to transfer - I lost a soj because game didn't save and reverted back even though I had picked up the item and saved and exited with item in inventory.

With that said - Krelm mentioned one of the common practices used for self muling.

As far as being sure a runeword will work - check the runeword information on Arreat Summit first before attempting and make sure the item and runes qualify.
