What happened to all those hundreds of Billions?

The Pentagon budget for last few years has topped $400B. Another $200B was spent on military operations in Iraq in the last few years.

Meanwhile the troops are apparently still under equipped.

Boston Globe's article about a recent Marine Corps report on the equipment shortfall:

http://www.boston.com/news/world/middleeast/articles/2005/06/21/marine_units_found_to_lack_equipment/

Arizona Republic report of how Marines are being asked to buy their own gear before being shipped out to Iraq:

Where is all this money going if the military can't provide the basic gear to the troops?

You actually thought the goverment was responsible with money?? I'm not sure where it went, but I know I don't trust the government spent it wisely.

Try asking them. They can't answer - they have no idea where the money goes. Much of it is consumed in big porky defense contracts, and a good amount of the rest goes to keeping bases open in congresscritters' backyards.

Also, be aware that the military always issues a complete set of equipment - it may just not be new, functional, timely, or appropriate. I wore my nice green & black Battle Dress Uniform through all of Desert Storm (making a perfect rifle target). They gave me my desert uniform & boots as I boarded the plane back to Germany.

But hey, there's a great way to fix all these problems = throw more money at them!

Im guessing it all went on bush's wonderful toy: the star wars satelite. Blow stuff up from the sky, and just to make it seem even more rediculous, we'll name it after a big hollywood film! Only in america would that happen...
Here we get boring things to waste money on like the national health service, old people, iraq, old people, and biscuits.

Haliburton? Do they get paid by the Pentagon?
I believe they do, but their payments don't even come close to the figures we're talking about. This is not about just a few "dubious" no-bid contracts or a few $100 million. I believe there is a systemic non-partisan problem, across the board in government spending.

One of the great stengths of the US system of government, namely judicious over-sight, is coming up short by miles.

They just fail to realize that in many cases, our technology is already superior. (not extremely, perhaps) That money should OBVIOUSLY go to equipping the soldiers all the same...

THEN spend it on new tech.

Last I checked, the Air Force is planning on buying 300+ F-22 Raptors at 250 Million each.

Don't forget research too. The cool classified stuff.

Like teleportation? I don't care to find the article now, but I know the government was doing an analysis to see if research in that area was worth funding.

They did, I do not remember if they stopped or not. I do know private companies are working on it, as well as Uni's. A university successfully teleported a ray of light recently.

I'd prefer to see the death ray laser operationally deployed on Big Black Delta blimps. Or rather, more than one. Er, scratch that...

I can think of about half a dozen Boeing office buildings all within a 5 minute drive of the Pentagon. I'd imagine those offices cost money, and I don't know of too many major airlines based out of National Airport.
