What do You call it?!?

So I put in this CD in my computer to open up whatever is on it... I accidently open the properties tab, and then it hits me:
What is the name of the digital nuber system, or whatever...
Where I live we use the metric system, 1000=1k and so on,
but in this wicke place its 1024=1k.

What is the name of this system?

Like Freet said, it's all about binary (base 2) as opposed to decimal (base 10).

i dont think the system is binary because he said 1024=1k and binary only has 1's and 0's. The closest thing i could come up with was hexidecimal which is base 16. 1024 in hexidecimal would only be 400 tho so i dont really know what this system is

2^10 bytes == 1024 bytes (one kilobyte)
2^20 bytes == 1048576 bytes (one megabyte)
2^30 bytes == 1073741824 bytes (one gigabyte)
etc.
