What do the things over my head mean?

ok, so when I hear that little noise, and mycharacter has little flames, or purple things, or white swirlies circling over his head, what does each one mean? Which are the most dangerous to my life, etc? Ihaven't seen anything to explain them. All that I know is that I die a lot easier at times.

They're just 'effects' which some enemies can inflict on you.

little flames = amplify dmg, you take +100% phys dmg

purple things = lower resist, you take around +30% odd or more elemental/magic dmg, exact % depends on monster's lvl. (higher = more, goes w/o saying ;) )

white swirly = similar effect to 'attract' curse of necro. In this case its just all enemy monsters within range will target the one with the swirly, be it you, your merc or another player in an MP game.

Quite a few others, i'm lazy to list them all. :p

Those are different curses cast by monsters, the most dangerous for a melee character is iron maiden, you receive a huge percentage of the damage you give back on your character and then you die quickly.
Another one looks like a flame over your head, that is amplify damage, meaning monsters will deal 100% more damage than normal to your character.
I remember that I saw the visual descriptions of all curses somewhere (forgot where), maybe someone knows and could post a link?

They all have the same graphic/effect as certain Necromancer curses, other than a few in Act 5 that aren't Necromancer curses. Such as Blood Mana curse, which drains life, rather than mana, when you preform a skill that requires mana.
EDIT: I believe your characters are only cursed with blood mana if their mana points are higher than their hitpoints.

That's correct. I think that it's also worth mentioning that if your hitpoints are higher than your mana, succubi use a curse that lowers your armor by a lot.

Edit: Out of curiosity, does anyone know the armor drain %? And what happens if your hitpoints and mana are exactly the same?

Just remember if you are a powerful melee character and you see red fire flies above your head, you ought to crouch over and kiss your butt goodbye.

About that blood mana/def curse, you can get cursed by the other if it's aimed at another player, and you just happen to be in range. You will get lower defence if you accidentally got cursed by def curse even if your mana is higher than your hp, but you will not loss health when casting even if you are accidentally cursed by blood mana, if you have higher hp than mana. Hope that made sense. :)
