What do people mean by max block?

What do people mean by max block?

I have around 75 dex with the boost of raven frost and disciple belt (base dex around 45.) When I activate holy shield, my max block reaches 75.
My question is why do many people put around 100 points into dex when u can reach max block by just turning on holy shield? Is it necessary to put 100 base dex pts in a pally, when I can spend more points into vita for more life?

I am not an expert in paladin, so please help me out thanks.

If your character screen says 75%, you have max block.

As you level up, you need more dex for max block, but its something like 2dex per level so you still benefit 3pts.

Certain shields have different natural block, you might have a 75% block shield, but my smiter currently has a 40%.

Don't go by the % on your shield after holy shield, hover over your defense in the character screen to see your real block %.

Adding to Chase's excellent reply, your chance to block is determined solely by the difficulty you're playing in, and not by the monsters you encounter. Essentially, you have the same chance of blocking a Fallen in Act 1 Hell as you have to block Uber Mephisto in Uber Tristram.

Re: What do people mean by max block?

Was wondering the same thing and came across this:

Code:
Total Blocking = [(Blocking * (Dexterity - 15)) / (Character Level * 2)]

Blocking = A total of the Blocking on all of your items. (E.g: Guardian Angel, Twitchthroe, Any Shield, Holy Shield)
[] = Round Down

Note: Blocking on shield shown in game is capped at 75% while it may actually be higher. For a true account of most shields blocking ability... Look here forUnique, Set, and Magical/Rare shields. (for magical/rare, add the Blocking % from the suffix to the base blocking)

Note 2: Block chance is divided by 3 after the 75% cap. You can't block more than 25% when running.

Example: A lvl85 Paladin with 100 Dex, Guardian Angel(20%), lvl20 Holy Shield (35%) and a Herald of Zakarum(82%).

    Total Blocking = [(Blocking * (Dexterity - 15)) / (Character Level * 2)]
    = (20 + 35 + 82 * (100 - 15)) / (85 * 2)
    = (20 + 35 + 82 * (85)) / (85 * 2)
    = (20 + 35 + 82 * (85)) / 170
    = (20 + 35 + 82 * (85)) / 170
    = (137 * 85) / 170
    = 11645 / 170
    = 68.5
    = 68% Chance to Block

Actually the difficulty has nothing to do with it at all.

CTB is determined by item+skill block, dex and clvl.

Then I got to learn something as well. Thanks for that. :)

If you look at the formula it's also interesting that the increase block per point spent in Dex is static: 0,806%. So, you need little over 6 points in Dex to get 5% block, no matter the difficulty (ahem) and your current block.

I believe the following is true:

In order to maintain the same Blocking% as you level up, you will need to spend two dex points according to:

Dexterity needed = 2*clvl+15

But you need to regard that items and charms can give some bonuses to dexterity, that shields can have different blocking rates and increased chances of blocking.
