What class best fits these requirements?

Hi, i've been playing diabloii on and off for a year or so, but i never got really far. After reading all the posts here (and the advent of summer), i've been inspired to try and make it through hell! So this is my question: what is a good class to play? I am loathe to invest a whole lot of time in a character that won't go the distance.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

1.) I can only play single player (multiplayer=computer meltdown) so the character can't be specific-eq dependent/ultra laggy
2.) I am playing dii: original (no mercs, runes etc.)
3.) Hammerdins are boring.

I've been snooping around this forum for awhile, and i've seen the sticky thread on character guides. Unfortunately, a lot of them require the things i've listed above. I'd appreciate your input and thoughts on this matter, thanks!

In D2C I'd recommend a guided-arrow/multi-shot Bowazon or a WWBarb. Both can be played through hell with whatever you find but the ultimate no-equip character would probably be a cold sorc.

If D2: Original refers to pre-patches of any kind, then I'd go for a WW Barb. Nothing will stand before you for long.

I played a Frenzy Barb through to Act I Hell before I finally got LoD. I remeber it took about 45 minutes just to kill Diablo in Normal.

I'de seriously consider getting the expansion. I've been able to find d2 in some of those large trashcan looking bins at computer stores. (You know the ones with buck fevor 5 and gone fishin :) ) Those bins where everything in them is $10. The expansion is great. The extra act is ok, but the value is in all the other little extras.

My first character back in classic was a necro. I just put points everywhere when new skills became available.. I wound up just using blood golem / iron maiden / revives / corpse explosion. I hadn't read about the bug or anything, just found it on my own. It's the ultimate "I can't be killed" character -- which makes it the ultimate "I'm bored" character. :) And killing act bosses was very hard. They'd destroy the summoned characters in no time, and I'd spend about 20 minutes running around and firing bone spirits.

Unfortunately that was the only classic character I tried. But if I had to do it again, I'd definitely go sorceress! IIRC, there are no timered spells and less immunes. So maxing static field and frozen orb will pretty much make you an unstoppable killing machine. And it leaves you with tons of points to play with other skills (thunderstorm, nova, masteries, etc.).

But if you don't like a spell caster, I think WW Barbs are the best way to go. Altho I seem to remember necros and paladins being proclaimed the "most powerful" classes when the game was new. Necros because corpse explosion was just sickly powerful. But having never played one, I can't remember why paladins were so powerful. Maybe it was BH...

in Classic Dii, there are no immune monsters. Only resistant ones.

So, a sorc can be good. Frozen Orb is quite powerful, and Cold Mastery helps vs resists. Really, any version of sorc will be good.

However, I recent tried D2 classic again, and your levelling will be a lot slower than in the expansion. I don't think you will be able to use the /players 8 command to increase the monster toughness AND increase the exp gained for killing the monsters.

What I found was that in D2 classic, my sorc wasn't level 30 til Act 2 NM. Compare that to what I'm used to: My sorcs are often level 30 before finishing act 3 normal.

So while a sorc is powerful, she will be weak.

For classic, you may be much better off with a bowazon. Bowazons require some mana steal, so it will be hard until you can find a ring/ammy with mana steal. Barbs/Pallys I didn;t play much in Classic, so I can't advise you.

Necros in classic mostly have to rely on blood golem/IM for slow kills, and/or Corpse Explosion for faster kills. your skels/magi are really only distractions. Revives aren't too bad though, except they are often not good at keeping up with you as you move around the map, so you tend to summon new ones a lot (they go away after 3 min anyways)
