What's better overall? Coh or FORT. I want a merc that will sruvie longer and hit good enough damage. Is fort better for a lonbger lasting merc or a coh?

CoH is kind of pointless on a merc should you ask me. If you want a merc that will kill stuff use a fort.

I say shaft for the massive DR for a hammerdin. If you must pick between fort and CoH, I say CoH as you want your merc to do as little damage as possible (so that he doesn't 1 shot himself to IM). Merc doesn't need to kill stuff with a hammer anyways.

All depends on where you're using the merc, and what you want it to do.

    - Kill stuff (unnecessary for a hammerdin, but great for a goldfind barb) - Fort
    - Provide aura (and not die) - Shaft+Gaze with resist jewels.
    - Keep undead away (as in CS runs) - Act3 ice merc with a sword with "Sanctuary" aura.
    - Crowd controlling - This could be many things. Delirium mercs, reaper's mercs, "Ice" bow rogue (mentioned in another thread here), Holy Freeze mercs... Anyway, shaft+gaze or treachery+gaze works wonders.

EDIT: Oh, yeah... sometimes you just want a tank. In that case, as much DR/resists/leech as you can get, with good damage. Hundreds of options, mostly depending on what you're fighting.

Also- another solution to the whole fort + IM problem I solved for my hdin merc by just keeping a really poor insight in a vogue (no, not cv, a plain vogue). He can still wear the fort (I like him to help killing most of the time) but have a low enough damage to not wipe himself out with the one hit IM.

Fort has a much higher def than shaft, especially when the frozen armor kicks in. I like it. But, Ideally you can get a shaft too, and put that on for any runs where IM is a threat.
