What (and how) to do with chipped gems?

in Cyrus' Zealot guide, he's said (well, yeah, a few years ago):
"And finally, don't forget you can cube any weapon class now with gems. I made a Cruel War Pike of Alacrity (1 socket) for my merc the other day with some chipped and trash gems I had laying around. So don't rule this option out at all."

i checked the cube recipes many times but can't see anything with chipped gems other than the socketed magic sword recipe. is this from an early patch, and if it's not, what's the formula? thx in advance.

A lot of that stuff here on dii.net is way out of date, go check at the Arreat Summit's Horardric Cube section. I believe that same chippy recipe now works with all weapon types, but my memory might be off.

There also is a recipe involving chippies and normal gems (those one step worse than flawless ones).

The 3 chipped/normal/flawless recipes are not very popular because rare items became so much better in 1.10 and the result will be an item with just 1-2 sockets instead of three in 1.09. I for myself keep a few of them for upgrading runes, leaving the rest on the ground.

Actually, both chipped and flawed gems work.

From Arreat Summit:

3 Chipped Gems + 1 Magic Weapon = Socketed Magic Weapon
This adds sockets to a magic weapon. The original magic weapon properties will be removed (rerolled) when the new weapon is created. If you use this formula with a weapon that is not normally socketed such as a Javelin, this recipe will create a new magical weapon without any sockets. ilvl=25 magic weapon with 1-2 sockets.

3 Flawless Gems + 1 Magic Weapon = Socketed Magic Weapon
This adds sockets to a magic weapon. The original magic weapon properties will be removed (rerolled) when the new weapon is created. If you use this formula with a weapon that is not normally socketed such as a Javelin, this recipe will create a new magical weapon without any sockets. ilvl=30 magic weapon with 1-2 sockets.
And also don't forget this:

3 Standard Gems (normal) and 1 Socketed Weapon (Any Type) = 1 Socketed Magic Weapon (of same type)
This takes a socketed weapon and makes it a magic socketed weapon with a random number of sockets. This allows you to get new magic bonuses on an otherwise non magical weapon. The original weapon properties will be removed (rerolled) when the new weapon is created. ilvl = 30. It gets 1-2 sockets.

ilvl 25... not overwhelming, but worth a try with low level chars.

thank you all :)

Don´t forget that any (non-orb/staff/wand) weapon with a QLVL of 76 or higher can get Cruel with these recipes. I have cubed such weapons in early Hell more than once. Those high-level areas in act 1 Hell can be a godsend if you play untwinked!

A plain Cruel weapon with a socket is very likely to be the best you´ve seen up to early Hell. If you are lucky and roll a good suffix (life steal, mana steal, extra speed...) and two sockets, all the better.
