We're old...

I loved Diablo II, and I played it a lot (as anyone who knew me online can attest). I stopped playing when I was a sophomore in college. By the time Diablo III comes out (I'm assuming late 2010, early 2011), I'll be established at my job, living on my own and taking night classes. Giving it some thought, it's pretty likely I won't have either the time or the energy to devote to long hours on the computer cutting down zombies. I would guess that a lot of the kids who played DII will be far from kids when DIII is released. The generation that devoted so much time to DII is all grown up. When I used to play, I would think about how cool a sequel would be, but now it seems like I've aged out of the video-game demographic. Just wondering if anyone else feels the same way, or has some thoughts on this... :coffee:

For those of us that were already "old" when D2 came out I suspect it won't make a lot of difference, we are just "older".... :)

I started late in my sophomore year at school and have been playing off and on since then. Now I'm ready to graduate with a 2nd degree and D3 won't be coming out until I'm firmly established in my job and hopefully just living in my parents house to watch after them in their advanced age.
Of course when I bring home D3 I can just hear the rant I'm going to get about it. Well Diablo is worth it!

Really there is not much in life that I enjoy more in my free time than a good video game. For me I know I'll make the time to play some diablo 3 no matter what because that's what I really enjoy.

I haven't really found the thing in life yet that can pull me away from something like diablo 3, but I probably will someday. In the meantime I can sink my time into a great game like diablo 3 =).

I am in my mid 30's now and I used to play Diablo/Diablo 2 as much as I could in my free time back in the day. I'm just shocked it has taken Blizzard this long to announce Diablo 3 and now we're probably gonna wait another decade until launch...

Well, lets hope DIII is just like DII. A game where you don't have to spend hours to succeed in something. In DII, you can perfectly enjoy yourself for just a few hours a week. I'm quite sure DIII will be similar.

I used to only play 2 hours at friday night, cause then you don't have to learn. and it worked perfect.

The generations that grew up with video games (basically anyone under the age of 40 and quite a few people over that age as well) will probably be playing video games for the rest of their lives. Games overcame the stigma of being "just for kids" a long time ago, and are now just another option when it comes to electronic entertainment. We're no longer stuck with just radio and television.

Afaik the entire Nintendo generation is still into gaming no matter how old they are. Long gone are the days of only teens playing.

I'm at 42 and can definitely relate. Been playing computer games since the late 70s.

However can also attest for the fact that while I see myself still playing games when I reach such respectable ages as 60 or 70, there are a few important things that have been changing over the years and will almost for sure with many of you:

- Playing skill will degrade with time and you will follow a natural need to concentrate on other type of games.

- You will want to look for less adrenaline rushes and more contemplative(?) solutions sometimes as early as the mid 30s. Strategy games, turn-based especially, are godsend to me even though I always liked this genre since the golden days of computer wargames. But games like Diablo 2 also fit nicely, where games like CoD don't anymore.

- You will have trouble keeping up with gaming tendencies and often feel frustrated your voice is often very lonely in trying to give mainstream companies the idea there's a market too for less emotional and physical stringent games. So far the defining genre capable of crossing generations has been pure strategy games (not RTS, mind you). I'm hoping ARPGs too stay pretty much unchanged in terms of game complexity and especially controls.

- You will fear Wii idea of adult-games and have nightmares about it for the rest of your life. To imagine a world where the notion of adult-games can be essentially described as "games to make the family happy" is just too scary.

I think as Ive got older I sort of am less brave playing more reactive games even though I really want to as I love the Adrenhaline rush.I used to really enjoy playing DK2 MP and was pretty good sometimes(I could tell when I was playing good when I was actually checking on everything instead of just 1-2 things).I do like turn based strategy as you can totally optimise methods for winning where as in an RTS lack of reactions might mean you avoid using certain methods - like using a bigger range of units.I think D2 covers from slow (PvM Necro summoner) to fast(Assassin PvP) reaction gameplay probably part of the reason it has a wide audience.

Re: We're old...

I started D2 in 7th grade haha.

I'm 13th grade now (College freshmen)

I agree a lot with Woltotun. Anyone that started video games at an early age will play for the rest of their lives. Today we ridicule gamers that are 30+ calling them "no lives" but you can't blame them, eventually in 50+ years its common to see gamers that are 60+yrs (i would LOVE to live to see that time).

Its kind of funny, most old fashion adults like my parents, think that everyone kid should automatically quit video games at 18+ out of instinct but that is not true. My parents see two their friend's kids quitting games once they started college and they assume that is the case for ALL adolescents.

I agree with Krugar as well, that once we're over the hill we'll start to suck at games no matter how much experience we have under our belts, sure we can have sniping experience of 50 years but that is not enough to compensate for our slow reaction and less invigorated minds.

I'm only 18 now but I can feel that being 40+ is somewhere around the corner. I'm just going to cherish my youth before that time comes.

Oh my I think you just discovered the reason behind the financial crises, the pandomeni, and how Bush could be president for more than zero periods.

I was around 11-12 when D2 came out, and am 21 now, I started playing games when I was five or six, starting with captain comic, the very first game I completed I always sought for the "perfect game", though as time have passed I've become more and more distant from games, playing them around one hour a day now, which reminds me I'm off to go play some diablo 2 now, see ya!

I started playing when I was 15, 6 years ago. I can't wait to have grandkids in their teens, just so i can completely school them in the games they play ;).

Friends, we will be like the elder barbarians in the coming milestone of video games....aged to perfection!

Re: We're old...

there is always time for a great game. i was already off and on my own when d2 launched and i found more than enough (too much really) time to play that game. now my game time is less now than it was then but that is cause of children, 3 kids takes most of my time at nights, however i still squeeze wow time so i am sure i will fit d3 in there

Re: We're old...

I'm 26 now (27 soon) and I've been playing games for god knows how long... I played so many games on atari consoles, gameboy and pc that I have no idea at which point I actually started. I do remember that the first game I ever played was pong with remotes that just had one big "button" you had to turn left or right to move the paddle.

Can also agree with the fact that I'll more than likely be playing games untill I'm old and wrinkly :D (or at least I'll try)
Thinking about that I've probably been playing games for a really large part of my life already...

My gaming lifespan is a mirror image of yours dude! I'm 27, loved my Atari and had a Videomaster! (written on the box, my Dad got one of the first when it came out in England for my bro n me, far too small for it at first! I have the one with the 'James Bond' Gun...shame it doesnt work anymore and stinks of ozone when you click the trigger!)

Maybe you're really one and same person? Would be kind of creepy if even your IP's was the same :D

Anyway no one seems to have asked this, so would some wrote a bit about why they like gaming so much as well? For me, when I was younger, it was because it was this whole different world, where I could do anything I wanted, later realising the possibilites were pretty endless if I learned how to actually make games (never happened, maybe it will later), but along the road I realised what matters for was not fun, as I though when I was younger as fun is the "best" feeling and is the "most pleasent time", no for me what matters is love, it matters for me that those I love are safe and free, that they're well and feel good. And I realised that even with unlimitted power in the game world, I need to first change a lot of things in the real world, before that unlimitted power would be able to last forever, if that wasn't possible it would never be unlimitted, which again would never mean unlimitted fun. Pretty funny to think about, anyway your turn.
