If you're starting out untwinked and you want to start MFing ASAP it might be decent idea to start a blizzard sorc. Yes, this sounds odd but basically it allows you to start running normal Travincal and Diablo the moment you get the skill and breeze through NM with ease and also milk the cow easily aswell. However, once you get sufficient gear regarding FHR, castrate and block you could always respec the sorc based on socialism's guide. You can easily make a variation out of it if you can just figure out 'reasonable*' skill balance.

As for energy shield, not really used it and having sufficient FHR, castrate (and block once you find a proper shield) and plenty of lifecharms in inventory is more than sufficient to tank several hits (even though not obviously recommended) once in a while and then comes the potential problem from manaburn mob. Now, with maxed teleport without ES given you have highish mana by charms\items and sufficient default regen rate it's easy to reach infitele, and there's been few moments I haven't even realised I was hit by a manaburn mob as I can instantly tele out the very second it happens. Now with energy shield it's easy to reach infitele aswell but if you get hit more than once by a manaburn mob you're basically shishkebab since your lifebulb is small and enemies can easily hit around ~100 damage per hit in hell without any extra modifiers. Add extra strong + CE\FE\LE, spectral hit or so (it hurts even with max resists), add might and extra fast and things might just get ugly. Triple this for Maulers as they can inflict crushing blow :p

Now of course it should be worth mentioning that properly geared and 'built' sorc that blindteles is probably one of the fastest and safest way to move around in its own way, but that's mostly due making necessary precautions to prevent situations where you could be killed in a nanosecond or killed due specific mod. Highish lifebulb is obvious, low cost teleport (my own is 3pt currently) negates manaburn, block negates plenty of other common effects while FHR makes it far less painful to get out if you actually get hit, which is bound to happen eventually. Take 1-2 away and suddenly it's a good way to die fast :p

*'reasonable' as in that it doesn't take ten years to kill anything stronger than Fallen in hell.
