Edit: BTW when u press that is anything special supposed to happen?
In v1.09 and earlier, you get no message or other indication. I believe (I might be mistaken) that it just appears as regular text, spoken by your character, like:
ImmortalBlood: players 8
In v1.10, you get a confirmation message:
ImmortalBlood: players set to 8
Note that for versions before 1.10, the command is
players x or
playersx, and in v1.10, it is
/players x or
/playersx. Note the
/ before the command. This also applies to other commands, like
/fps, which was just
fps before v1.10. Another thing to remember is it will only affect monsters which have not yet been spawned. Stuff spawns somewhat off-screen (I'm not sure how far off, but it's not too far), so if you know you're coming to an area with tough monsters, and you want to lower the /players setting, do it well before you get there.
If you're playing in Normal, though, you should be able to do the whole game (Ancients and Act bosses too, if you have a bit of patience) on /players8. One of the best things about this for characters dependant on life/mana leech is that you can leech more from tougher monsters, as the most you can leech is your leech % of its life. Thus, with 5% leech, if you do 100 damage to a 20-life monster, you get 1 point back, not 5. Most melee characters still kill in three hits or less in Normal on /players8, so the added leech is really nice. For spellcasters, it's a bit tougher, as it means you need to expend more mana to kill everything, but now that you can buy mana potions, this is nothing more than a mild annoyance.
