Using the sol rune

The sol rune has the "damage reduced by 7" when you put it on armor so I decided to stick in 2 sols in my griswald's armor + a tal for poison resist.

Should I have gone for another sol, making it 21 damage reduced? Or did I make a bad move and just wasted 2 sols (potentially 2 insight re-rolls)?

I read somewhere that the damage reduced by X is actually a huge help when you're a melee toon, which I am. I am currently lvl 52 zeal/smite pally. Haven't really tried the armor yet, but slapped it on and it looks good.

would an armor sol'ed 4x be effective in negating damage?

Monsters in Hell do around 100 damage. If you have enough damage reduced by X you completely negate any damage monsters do.

The game first checks for Integer PDR, then reduces the rest of the damage by % if you have any.

Putting three Sol runes in a mask will let you walk most of nightmare, particularly if you can scrape together another few xPDR from somewhere.

There are other, better, items - but that one is cheap and cheerful and easy to get together.

I'm making one right now and so far in Hell I'm pretty much immortal. Sometimes I just stop surrounded by mobs and start chatting and nothing happens to my life bulb. I'm still abut 35 PDR from my end game equipment.

The paladin and the barb still both work well. There haven't been any significant changes to the game mechanics (in this regard) since version 1.10 came out (~5 years ago, or so). The introduction of ubers is the only addition since then.

Asmodeous wrote a very nice PDR Berzerker guide that looks similar to TheMightyGoat's barb. Here's that link.

I've also experimented with the paladin variants and managed to finish with a virtually indestructible zealot - although he's more susceptible to IronMaiden. In the end I wish he'd had less PDR (50-60 would've been great) so he could focus on offense a little more... not that his attack was lacking, just that some of the equipment could've been more offensive-oriented. Here's that link (actually, SpongebobII was the one that was really indestructible).

He should be capable, but I think you'll still take some damage from Nihl's Corpse Explosion... but you should be able to survive it quite well with high fire resists + PDR + BattleOrders.

As for UT, I have no idea. I would think you'd still need some leeching, so the paladin would probably be a better solution for that.

I have always played only barbarians so far with one fresh exception of my lvl50 bowazon. I have done a build for each weapon mastery and was about to move to some other character class...but this PDR barb is so cool

The UT question - I see paladins everywhere and it seems that only they go UT these days, 60% of chars on my bnet channel are palas (+30% sorceress), everybodys asking a pala for help...sort of over-paladined.
Does anybody do UT with a barb?
I go harvest some SOLs!

Frenzy barb is not a bad choise for UT :thumbsup:
