    Usefulness of Ethereal Unique

Hello again. It has been awhile since I posted my introduction post and had much to say on the forums. I have been lurking the past few months while my interest in D2 came back around. I finally got around to getting my first patriarch (fishymancer) and now have a meteorb sorc at hell pindle. I am using her to gather items for some various builds I want to try. One build is a CL/FO sorc, and I finally got an item that looked great for that build. Unfortunately, it was ethereal, as you can see:

    Griffon's Eye
    Diadem
    Defense: 209
    Durability: 11 of 11
    Required Level: 76
    Item Version: 1.10 Expansion
    Item Level: 86
    Fingerprint: 0x6e4806b3
    +127 Defense
    25% Faster Cast Rate
    +1 to All Skill Levels
    +13% to Lightning Skill Damage
    -17% to Enemy Lightning Resistance
    Ethereal (Cannot be Repaired)

My question is if I did get a CL/FO sorc up to 76th level where I could use this, would the fact that it is ethereal make it break before I could really get any use out of it? I have never played around with any ethereal items before, so I have no clue how quick they lose their durability. I would hate to be planning on using this for higher damage, then lose it in a few runs.

    Thanks,
    Ingram

as long as you don't take too much of a beating while wearing it it should last for quite awhile. then take it off when it's down to 1 durability.
then use it on an act 3 merc*runs from a hail of stones*

Firstly, using my sorceress, I rarely ever get hit, so the loss of durability isn't an issue for her. As long as you stand back and let your merc tank then you should find it will last you quite a while. Secondly, there is a cube recipie I believe that will repair this item for you. I'm not sure what it is, but someone will come along and have that knowledge, takes a medium level rune to do if my memory serves me ok.

    Edit:

1 Ral Rune + Armor = Fully Repaired Armor
Use this Rune + Your Horadric Cube to repair your armor. You cannot repair ethereal armor.

    Can't repair ethereal, my bad.

Actually IIRC there is ways to prolong its use. When it goes down to 1, socket it and it would revert to full durability. I would not be surprised if I remembered wrongly though.

Haha, Act 3 merc was the first thing in my mind, too. If only Rogue mercs could still do the lightning attack. :D

I would also just wear it until it breaks or just keep it and possibly trade it to some crazy eth grailer.

I think I recall reading that using the act 5 socketing and naming quests restore full durability to an item.

What about the personalizing trick? Does that still work?

I read about that too in 1.09, when people were looking for ways to repair eth Fury balrog blades. I'm not certain it worked back then, and I have no idea whether it would still work in 1.10 or not, I guess someone should test this

If all else fails, use it on a might merc with Crescent Moon. Since Might mercs are so popular, this would help him out, but it is clearly not the best merc helm.

I don't know about helms, but it takes belts forever to use up their durability. :)

IIRC it rerolls the durability on the item (like when it is dropped...).

So since eths almost always drop at full durability, it is like repairing?

I never understood the reluctance to use eth Uniques.
"but it may break, and then I can't use it" you say? Are you using it now? If "no" then what difference does it make? it might as well be broken if you aren't using it anyway. Use it until it breaks or until it almost breaks then give it to a moron. You might as well get what use out of it you can rather than just let it sit in a stash gathering dust while you try to find a non-eth version.
