    URLs

Okay, so I'm still planning to buy a URL, but I'd like to know the difference between:

    .net
    .com
    .org
    .biz

    etc...

Is it just a name or is there are real difference? I know you have to have .com if you're planning to make money or something but otherwise, just for personal use, is there a big difference? Does the price vary for these? Thanks.

The tag will not effect performance in the least. The price does vary at some domain name registries, but only by a dollar or two. .com and .net are going to be the easiest for people to remember. .org shouldn't really be used unless it has some kind of group attached to it like a forum or group of concerned whatevers. .biz and all that other stuff will be hard to remember and some browsers I have heard don't support them. . .never come across them though.

    I think this is correct...
.com = community...the majority of websites out there.
.net = network...the site is part of a series of sites (like dii.net is part of loadedInc).
    .org = organization...an official business

These aren't strict rules, but I think that's usually how it goes.

Why does durf have .org then!?

Is it okay to make a personal site on .net?

I always thought .com was Commercial, and are generally the most expensive URL to purchase.
.org I think is actually free if you have a registered organisation (that's just a free name though, not the space/traffic/etc)

Registration of an organisation is so exspensive it wouldn't be any cheaper anyhow.

Those aren't strict rules just kind of ideas to go by. You don't have to follow them, although .org is usually left alone unless you have a real group to show. Then again no one is going to stop you from using the URL, unless of course you buy it because you think you will be able to sell it at a higher price to someone else. As long as you are going to actually use the URL and like the tag, go for it.

Besides who would ever want durf.anything, they would always get blammed for everything.

Originally these categories were split up pretty strictly.

I don't think you can get a domain with those last two suffixes unless you're really a school or government agency. But the others have all sort of morphed into one another over time. Most people who are serious about grabbing a domain name for their company (or even a personal site) will try to get all three of those. I should have bought durf.com off of my uncle while he still had it; now it (along with durf.net) is in the hands of some slimy cyber-squatter.

There are also all those more recent additions to the pool, like .biz and .info.

The three-letter codes are mostly for North American sites USA in particular). If you get a domain name in another country you can get the two-letter country tag on the end. This gives you things like .co.jp and .or.uk and so on.

If you want a country-specific tag, you're probably best off looking at hosting service providers in that country. They'll usually have domain-name plans.

So you're in Japan, and your host/server thing is in the US, is it slow?

Not really slow . . . My download speeds are all right and the upload to the server is fast enough for me. I've uploaded 500MB+ disk images for people before without too much trouble.

Any plan you pay for will have FTP access. If it doesn't offer that you need a new plan.

I use www.racknine.com and they're all right . . . quite cheap. I recently heard about www.yrhost.com and the plans they offer are pretty affordable too. I'm going to be starting up another site soon and I might try them out for it.

There have been some pressureing of the US government to make all the"adult" websites to use the end tag(what ever you call them) .xxx, meaning all the porn sites would HAVE to pay like 50 bucks to get the tag .xxx

With thousands of "adult" sites thats a lot of bucks.

It would also make it really easy for schools and parents to block all websites with an XXX in the URL. Probably put some of those NetNanny-type companies out of business in the process.

The money goes to third-world dictators, who use it to buy weapons that we will use twenty years later as a reason to invade their little states. Either that or it goes to Ash Housewares.
